Essendon Hero Supports Hird to Save Bombers’ Future

Essendon Icon Kevin Sheedy Backs James Hird for Return as Senior Coach

Essendon legend Kevin Sheedy has once again voiced his support for James Hird to return as the club’s senior coach following the departure of Brad Scott. Sheedy, a revered figure in the club’s history, has long believed that Hird is the right person to lead the Bombers through their current challenges.

Sheedy had previously campaigned for Hird to take over the coaching role ahead of the 2023 season but was ultimately unsuccessful. However, on Tuesday, Hird expressed his desire to return to Essendon during an appearance on Channel Nine’s Footy Classified, a statement that Sheedy strongly endorsed.

“I think it would keep the place calmer than where it’s been,” Sheedy said on SEN. “If he was wanting to take the job, I’d vote for him in my membership vote. As simple as that. It’s up to the board and the president to make that decision.”

Sheedy emphasized that Hird’s passion for Essendon is crucial for the club’s recovery. He highlighted that coaching Essendon requires more than just professional skills—it demands a deep emotional connection to the club.

“I think it’s good. I think it’s open. I think it’s honest. I did make a comment saying to coach Essendon, you have to love Essendon. I think he does. And I think he’ll do everything to make this right this time around, if he ever gets it. He may not get it. There may be people at Essendon who never want him to coach at Essendon. I don’t know who they are.”

While Sheedy acknowledged that there may be resistance from some within the club, he believes the fans and the broader Essendon community would support Hird if given the opportunity.

“I think in the end, the people and the fans most likely do. I don’t know what the feeling is around town. But if he got the chance, he won’t muck this up.”

A Leader Who Lives and Breathes Essendon

Sheedy stressed that the club needs someone who truly lives and breathes Essendon to guide them out of their current turmoil. He drew a comparison to Eddie McGuire’s involvement with Collingwood in the late 1990s, which helped transform the club into a powerhouse in the AFL.

“I think if you go deeper, and dig deeper, you give it your life,” Sheedy added. “I couldn’t do anything more for Essendon when I coached there. I’m only going back on my feelings. Some guys view it as a job. To me, it was never a job. And I think Hird is that kind of person.”

Despite his strong support for Hird, Sheedy stopped short of suggesting he would actively campaign for the position. He made it clear that he would not be involved in pushing for Hird’s appointment.

“I won’t be doing anything,” he said. “I’m not out there canvassing for anybody. Once he gets the job, I’d help him. It’s very hard. You can’t force your opinion on people.”

President Welsh Leaves the Door Open

President Andrew Welsh has not ruled out Hird for the vacant coaching position. This opens the possibility of Hird returning to Essendon, though the final decision rests with the club’s board.

Hird previously coached the Bombers from 2011 to 2013 and for part of the 2015 season, overseeing a total of 85 games. His tenure was marked by both success and controversy, including the drug scandal that affected the team during his time as coach.

Despite the challenges, Sheedy remains confident that Hird could bring stability and a renewed sense of purpose to the club. Whether or not Hird returns, his legacy at Essendon continues to shape the discussions about the club’s future.
