A Hobby Turned Record-Breaking Achievement
What began as a simple hobby has evolved into a remarkable Guinness World Records title for Daniel Park, a dedicated Bearbricks collector from the United States. With an impressive collection of 3,482 pieces of merchandise from the popular collectable brand, he has become the proud holder of the record for the largest collection of Bearbrick bears.
In March, Daniel, who is known as BrickChicago on social media, officially claimed the title with his extensive shelves filled with vibrant, painted plastic figurines. His journey started five years ago with a single blind box reveal, and since that moment, he has transformed his home office into a figurative museum dedicated to the iconic silhouette of Bearbricks.
The Origins of Bearbricks
Bearbricks were first introduced in 2001 by Tatsuhiko Akashi, the founder of the Japanese toy company Medicom. Akashi was commissioned to create a gift for participants at the 2001 World Character Convention in Tokyo, and in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the teddy bear, he replaced the heads of his toys with the iconic bear head. This innovative design gave birth to a new category of collectible items that feature a wide range of colors and designs.
Today, Bearbricks sit at the intersection of toy and art, with each semiannual drop featuring highly sought-after decorations created by various celebrities, artists, designers, and musicians. The original Bearbricks collection record was set in 2020 by Chinese collector Gao Ke, who had 1,008 bears. However, Daniel’s collection of 3,482 bears surpassed this record, making him the current title holder.
The Inspiration Behind the Collection
Daniel shared that what initially captivated him and continues to drive him is the brilliance of the standard platform. “It is a remarkable canvas that allows for infinite creative expression while maintaining a consistent, iconic silhouette,” he said.
His inspiration came from a conversation with his eight-year-old daughter when they were flipping through a Guinness World Records book. She asked what the record for a Bearbricks collection was, and Daniel saw an opportunity to show her that with passion, effort, and discipline, a personal hobby can become a world-class achievement.
A Labor of Love
The verification process for the record was time-consuming, but Daniel found it to be a labor of love. “While the work was tedious, it was a labor of love that I am incredibly proud to showcase to my daughter and the global collecting community,” he remarked.
He also noted that the versatility of Bearbricks’ design appeals to everyone in his household. “In my home, there is a design for everyone,” he said. His other children are drawn to superhero themes like Batman and Superman, while his daughter enjoys classics such as Hello Kitty, Mickey Mouse, and the Ninja Turtles.
The Artistic Appeal of Bearbricks
For Daniel, the appeal of Bearbricks lies in how they blend streetwear with fine art. As a local from Palatine, Illinois, he loves decorating his home with bear-shaped designs inspired by collaborations with legendary artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol, and Keith Haring.
His collection also includes hundreds of bears that reference pop culture or modern history, such as basketball players like LeBron James, movie characters like ET or Jason from Friday the 13th, and cultural figures like the Japanese beckoning cat.
Beyond the standard figurines, Daniel also keeps larger Bearbricks scaled up to 400% and 1,000%, which serve as interior decor in his house. “Curating this collection within my home office has transformed my workspace into a gallery of inspiration,” he said. “Surrounding myself with these designs brings me immense joy every single day.”
So congratulations, Daniel, you and your Bearbricks are Officially Amazing!
