Honda’s New Hybrid Ute Set to Challenge the BYD Shark 6
Honda is reportedly preparing to introduce a new V6 hybrid ute that could potentially outperform the BYD Shark 6. According to recent reports, the Japanese automaker is planning to launch this model before the end of the decade. A report in Auto News suggests that Honda will cease production of its current Ridgeline ute this year and replace it with a new hybrid-powered model starting from the second half of 2028.
Potential Market for Honda Ute in Australia
Despite its success in North America, the Ridgeline has never been available in Australia. The model has been exclusive to left-hand drive markets since its introduction over two decades ago. However, there are indications that Honda may be considering bringing the ute to the Australian market.
Several factors have historically prevented the Ridgeline from being launched in Australia. These include prohibitive import costs from the US and the need for right-hand drive configurations. There were even reports last year that Honda was exploring the possibility of importing the ute to Japan.
Interest from Honda Australia
Honda Australia has shown interest in introducing the Ridgeline to the country. In 2020, then Chief Operating Officer Stephen Collins told CarsGuide that the ute was strongly requested by dealers and customers. He mentioned that it would require a significantly improved setup on the 3.5-litre petrol V6 engine, which currently produces 210Nm and 355Nm to aid towing and carrying capacity.

Hybrid Ute Could Be a Game Changer
The new hybrid version of the Ridgeline could provide the necessary power to make it an attractive option in Australia. This model would continue to ride on a monocoque chassis, setting it apart from ladder-frame rivals, but still designed for moderate lifting and towing. Such a hybrid ute could be particularly beneficial in a market where emissions-friendly vehicles are becoming increasingly important.
The hybrid setup could help Honda avoid New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES) fines, which are becoming more stringent. Additionally, the Ridgeline’s transformation aligns with Honda’s broader strategy of focusing on hybrid technology. The brand plans to introduce 15 new hybrid models globally by 2030.

Future of Honda in Australia
In addition to the hybrid ute, Honda has also canceled its electric car plans to focus on hybrids from 2027. This shift could see the introduction of models like the 2027 Honda CR-V and ZR-V in Australia. The company’s renewed emphasis on hybrid technology is expected to strengthen its position in the Australian market.
The potential arrival of the Ridgeline in Australia could mark a significant milestone for the brand. With its unique design and hybrid capabilities, the ute could fill a gap in the market, especially as consumers look for more sustainable and efficient options.
