Tennis World Calls for Rule Change After Zverev’s Shocking French Open Moment

Controversial Line Call Sparks Calls for Change at the French Open

Tennis fans and commentators have been vocal in their demands for the French Open to finally adopt line technology after a controversial moment that favored Alexander Zverev during Sunday night’s final. Zverev secured his first Grand Slam title by defeating Flavio Cobolli with a score of 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-1 in the deciding set.

This victory marked a historic moment for German tennis, as Zverev became the first German man to win a major since Boris Becker claimed the Australian Open in 1996. It was also Zverev’s fourth attempt in a Grand Slam final, having previously lost three title matches.

However, the match was somewhat overshadowed by a contentious line call late in the fourth set. A serve from Zverev was called in, despite the ball mark on the court clearly indicating it was out. The chair umpire reviewed the mark and confirmed the call, which gave the game to Zverev, putting him ahead 6-5 in the set.

The decision left many fans and commentators stunned, with several believing the call was incorrect. Cobolli managed to win the set, sending the match into a fifth and final set. However, the controversy reignited calls for the French Open to introduce electronic line calling technology, which is already used in other Grand Slam tournaments.

The French Open remains the only major tournament that relies on human line judges rather than technology. Officials have argued that the clay surface poses unique challenges for electronic systems, making them less reliable compared to hard and grass courts. Tournament director Amelie Mauresmo mentioned earlier in the tournament that there are no immediate plans to change the current system, but the situation will be reviewed after the men’s final.

The Tennis World Demands a Rule Change

Leading tennis journalist Jose Morgado expressed his frustration on social media, stating, “How is this called good? Scandalous.” Other fans echoed similar sentiments, with one commenting, “Enough is enough. You have the technology. Use it.”

Another user wrote, “Absolute disgrace and the players should not agree to play until Hawkeye is allowed completely.” A fourth person added, “That ball is clearly out. Horrible call. Not that Cobolli was going to win anyway, but wow.”

Zverev was overwhelmed after securing his first Grand Slam title. He said, “This court is so special to me in so many ways… but now finally, it’s a happy end.” He reflected on the journey, adding, “We’ve been through losses, we’ve been losers at times as well in the most important moments. But at the end of the day, we’re grand slam champions now, and that’s what counts.”
