$60M White House UFC: Seven Agencies Mobilised for Trump’s Fight

Preparations for a major UFC event slated for the White House’s South Lawn have necessitated an extensive mobilisation, involving over seven federal agencies, hundreds of daily on-site staff, and an estimated expenditure of at least $60 million. This figure, revealed in a recent legal filing, offers a rare insight into the logistical complexities and financial scale of the undertaking.

The event is being staged as part of the 250th anniversary of America’s founding, with the main attraction – seven mixed martial arts bouts – scheduled for Sunday. However, the proceedings could be halted by a judge, following a federal lawsuit filed by two Virginia residents against the National Park Service, the agency responsible for the South Lawn. The National Park Service formally opposed this request in court on Tuesday, using its filing to detail the extensive operational planning involved.

The court document stated that “well over $60 million and tens of thousands of hours of labor have been expended,” with the funding primarily sourced from the UFC and its affiliated organisations.

The Octagon and Spectator Seating

At the heart of the temporary arena constructed on the South Lawn will be the iconic octagon, the eight-sided cage where the combatants will face off. This structure is designed to accommodate approximately 4,000 spectators. An additional 120,000 attendees, who secured tickets through an online lottery, are expected to observe the event from the adjacent Ellipse.

Installation of the facilities commenced on May 20. The Secret Service collaborated closely with the UFC to meticulously screen between 20 and 30 trucks of equipment and between “700 and 900” staff members who arrived daily for the setup. While the legal document did not specify the exact amount of government resources dedicated to the project, it did confirm that seven agencies, including Homeland Security and the Federal Aviation Administration, have “allocated significant resources and manpower.”

Event Schedule

The weekend’s festivities are set to kick off on Saturday with a ceremonial weigh-in at the Ellipse. This will be followed by a concert featuring the popular country group, Zac Brown Band. Throughout the weekend, a “UFC Freedom 250 Fan Fest” will be in full swing, offering attendees a range of “interactive experiences,” live performances, celebrity appearances, “exclusive on-stage moments,” meet-and-greets, live music, and interviews with the athletes.

The highly anticipated seven bouts are scheduled to commence on Sunday night. Following the conclusion of the fights, President Trump is scheduled to depart for France to attend the G7 summit. The dismantling of all temporary installations is slated to begin the following day, with complete removal expected by June 23.

Athletes’ Rigorous Preparations

The fourteen athletes scheduled to compete are undergoing an intensely rigorous training regimen. Their preparations begin months in advance, culminating in a final week characterised by extreme weight-cutting and strict dietary adjustments. This often involves fasting, prolonged periods in saunas, and hot Epsom salt baths.

Athletes may shed as much as 20 pounds in the lead-up to weigh-ins, a practice designed to ensure fair competition among fighters of similar weight classes.

Lawsuit Alleges ‘Corrupt’ Use of National Monuments

The lawsuit, filed on Saturday by the Public Integrity Project on behalf of the two Virginia residents, contends that President Trump’s authorisation of the event contravenes National Park Service regulations that prohibit sporting events on federal parklands.

One of the attorneys involved in the case, Brendan Ballou, described the situation as a “corrupt use of our most sacred national monuments for private gain.” In its defence, the National Park Service countered these claims, while also using the detailed account of the event’s preparations to underscore the potential disruption. The agency’s filing expressed concern that “All these hopes could be dashed at the very last moment… by the whim of two people who believe they have superior taste and want to spoil the event for everyone else.”
