Inquest Opened into Tragic Death of Lancaster University Student

A formal inquest has been launched into the untimely death of Michele Chung, a promising second-year Earth and Environmental Science student at Lancaster University. Her body was discovered at Forton Services on the M6 motorway on February 19th of this year, sending shockwaves through the academic community and beyond.

The 21-year-old, who hailed from Wales, had embarked on her academic journey at Lancaster in 2024, demonstrating a keen interest in the planet’s complex systems. “The University was notified of Michele’s death on Thursday 19 February, and has since sought to reach out to those closest to her to offer direct support,” the statement read.

The university highlighted Michele’s active involvement within the campus community, noting her membership in Lonsdale College. Beyond her academic pursuits, she was an engaged member of the Pokémon and Doctor Who societies, showcasing a vibrant and multifaceted personality.

“Michele was a Lonsdale College member who was in the second year of her degree, having joined Lancaster in 2024, and was also a member of the Pokémon and Doctor Who societies. This will be a very difficult time for all who knew her, and the thoughts of the University community are with all her friends and family.”

Michele’s aspirations and outlook on life were eloquently captured on her LinkedIn profile. She described herself as a “creative and curious” individual with a deep-seated passion for the intersection of science and the arts.

“Throughout my life, I have been interested in the combination of both science and the arts,” she wrote. “There is an art in anything and everything we do. I want to help make our planet better for its species, wildlife and people whether that is in air, land or sea or even space.”

Her ambition extended to a desire for continuous personal and professional development within her chosen field. “I’m a creative, curious and determined individual who can adapt in new environments and would like to develop my skill set within the Earth and Environmental Science sector,” she added, painting a picture of a driven and thoughtful young woman with a clear vision for her future.
