Cathy Kelly: Chemo’s Toll and a Lucky Star’s Thanks

Bestselling Author Cathy Kelly Celebrates Cancer-Free Milestone After Gruelling Battle

Renowned Irish author Cathy Kelly, 59, has shared the joyous news that she has received the all-clear following a challenging fight with breast cancer. The diagnosis arrived in July 2023, a period that also coincided with her navigating a divorce. Kelly candidly described the arduous treatment, which included numerous rounds of radiation therapy and chemotherapy, as something that “nearly destroyed me.”

Speaking on the popular Irish television program Ireland AM, Kelly reflected on the immense personal upheaval she has faced. “I’ve been through a separation, divorce, cancer, [and] moving house,” she explained. “It’s a difficult journey – but the great thing that I got out of it is that I have huge gratitude for being alive.” As her 60th birthday approaches in September, Kelly expressed a profound sense of presence and appreciation for simply being here. “Somebody asked me, ‘Is that going to be hard?’, and I’m going, ‘Do you know what? I’m here’,” she stated, highlighting her renewed perspective on life.

Kelly drew a poignant comparison to her late friend and fellow author, Emma Hannigan, who tragically passed away in March 2018 at the age of 45 after battling cancer an astonishing 11 times. “Lots of people, like Emma Hannigan, are not here and didn’t get to reach 50,” Kelly remarked, paying a heartfelt tribute to Hannigan’s resilience and spirit.

The anniversary of Hannigan’s passing was approaching, prompting Kelly to reflect further on her friend’s extraordinary strength. “Her anniversary is actually next Tuesday, Emma Hannigan, such an amazing woman. She worked so hard to be there for her family and her beautiful children,” Kelly said. Her own experience with chemotherapy provided a stark insight into the immense fortitude Hannigan must have possessed. “Getting it and going through chemo, I realised how amazing she was because chemo nearly destroyed me,” Kelly admitted. She recalled spending time with Hannigan in oncology day units, witnessing firsthand her friend’s incredible endurance through multiple cancer recurrences. “I used to sometimes go in and sit with her in day oncology and be talking – she had cancer 11 times, so it made me see how incredible a person she was.”

Now, with her own health battle behind her, Kelly expressed immense relief and gratitude. She informed Ireland AM hosts Tommy Bowe and Elaine Crowley, “I’m clear at the moment, thank the lucky stars and everything, the beautiful doctors and nurses and everyone who worked with me.” The experience has profoundly reshaped her outlook. “I’ve had a lot of gratitude and things are good,” she concluded, embracing a future filled with renewed appreciation for life.
