Broncos rookie sparks extension talks after stunning debut

Brisbane Broncos Explore Future with Tom Duffy

The Brisbane Broncos have started discussions with young halfback Tom Duffy to keep him at the club beyond this season. This comes after Duffy made his debut for the Broncos on Friday night, stepping in as a replacement for skipper Adam Reynolds, who was ruled out due to a groin injury.

Duffy faced a tough challenge, especially considering he previously played for the Cowboys, the team that released him after just a few games. Despite this, he showed great promise during his debut, delivering strong performances against a formidable Cowboys side.

According to reports from the Courier Mail, the Broncos are keen to retain Duffy for the long term. The club sees him as a key player in the race for the vacant halfback position alongside Jonah Pezet next year. With Reynolds set to retire at the end of the season, Duffy has a unique opportunity to prove himself as a top-tier playmaker.

Pezet, who had a short stint with the Parramatta Eels this year before moving to Brisbane, is also seen as a potential partner for Ezra Mam in the halves. The Broncos are looking to build a strong and competitive halfback line for the future.

Strong Debut Performance

Duffy rose to the occasion during his debut, recording two try assists and three-line break assists against the Cowboys. His performance was further highlighted by a crucial field goal in the final moments of the game, which put the Broncos ahead. Although North Queensland scored a try to secure the win, Duffy’s contributions were undeniable.

His manager, Sam Ayoub, confirmed to the Courier Mail that discussions are already underway regarding an extended contract for Duffy. Ayoub emphasized that Duffy deserves the opportunity to stay with the Broncos.

“We are in discussions now about an upgraded and extended contract for him,” Ayoub said. “Tom deserves it. We’re working through it. Tommy is a great kid. He is absolutely an NRL-quality playmaker. He doesn’t whinge or complain, and he works hard. He has a level of class about him, and that’s what the Broncos have seen in him.”

Positive Outlook for the Future

Ayoub added that Duffy is very settled and happy in Brisbane. He believes that the young halfback would love to stay with the club, especially with the opportunity presented by Reynolds’ retirement.

“There’s no rush, but the Broncos like Tom and Tom is happy there, so I’d like to think we will get a deal done,” Ayoub concluded.
