A Unique Opportunity to Own a Piece of Neighbours History
For over four decades, the Australian soap opera Neighbours has been a staple of television, capturing the hearts of audiences with its engaging stories and beloved characters. Now, fans have a rare chance to own a piece of the show’s legacy. Dementia Australia is currently auctioning one of the most iconic props from Neighbours — the portrait of Mrs Nell Mangel — to raise funds for the charity.
The painting, which has become a memorable part of the show’s history, was originally created by character Helen Daniels (played by Anne Haddy) in 1987. Despite being described as “a monstrosity” by Mrs Nell Mangel (played by Vivean Gray), the portrait became a fixture on Ramsay Street and a running joke throughout the series. It has since become an enduring symbol of the show’s charm and humor.
After the series concluded in December 2025, the painting was gifted to Annie Jones, who portrayed Jane Harris, Mrs Nell Mangel’s granddaughter. Now, Annie is donating it to Dementia Australia, a cause close to her heart.
“I support people living with dementia, their families and carers deeply,” Annie said. “I also can’t wait to see the reactions from fans and where this beloved painting ends up.”
The portrait comes with additional memorabilia, including a letter from Neighbours producer Andrew Thompson and an authenticity letter from Annie Jones. It is also signed by several key cast members, such as Jackie Woodburne, Takaya Honda and Rebekah Elmaloglou.
A Chance to Support a Important Cause
Dementia Australia sees this auction as a unique opportunity to engage fans while raising vital funds for research and support services. For many Australians and international viewers, Neighbours was more than just a show — it was a part of daily life for decades.
Dr Kaele Stokes, Executive Director Services, Engagement and Research at Dementia Australia, highlighted the significance of the auction.
“Fans can now own an iconic piece of the show’s history while helping to support families impacted by dementia, which is the leading cause of death in Australia,” she said.
This initiative not only allows fans to connect with the show they love but also contributes to a meaningful cause that affects countless lives across the country.
How to Participate in the Auction
The portrait is currently up for auction on eBay, with the highest bid reaching $7,000 AUD at the time of writing. The auction will continue until 9am AEST on Monday, May 4, 2026.
