Seven-seat SUV that becomes a ute

If you’re looking for a large family SUV but also crave the ruggedness and versatility of a dual-cab ute, the Chery Tiggo V, recently unveiled at the Beijing motor show, could be the perfect solution. Designed to be “one vehicle for all scenarios,” the Tiggo V is an evolution of the T1TP concept that debuted last year, now refined for production at the Beijing motor show.

Unlike the Chery Himla dual-cab ute it shares its appearance with, the Tiggo V is built on a car-like monocoque structure. However, its standout feature is the swappable rear canopy, which can be completely removed or replaced with one of six different configurations, including a camper model. This flexibility makes it ideal for various lifestyles and needs.

Most buyers are expected to opt for the seven-seat layout, but those moving homes or requiring extra space can switch out the station wagon-style rear end for a cargo van topper. This modification allows the Tiggo V to carry up to 600 litres of luggage, with four anchor points and up to four partitions available to secure heavy loads.

While there’s no official word on the SUV-cum-ute’s payload capacity, its car-based design suggests it won’t match the hauling capabilities of traditional utes like the Ford Ranger, which can carry up to 1000kg. The rear structure is designed for easy removal thanks to a quick-release mechanism, although details on the weight of each rear body and whether heavier options, such as the optional camper, will require dealer installation remain unclear.

When converted into ute form, a variable partition behind the second sliding row of seats ensures the cabin remains protected from the elements in the exposed bed.

Measuring over 5000mm in length with a 2800mm wheelbase, the Tiggo V offers ample legroom and can accommodate up to seven passengers. A more luxurious six-seater version with a 2+2+2 configuration is also available.

Under the hood, the Tiggo V is expected to feature an advanced version of Chery’s Super Hybrid plug-in hybrid powertrain. This system combines an ultra-efficient 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine, an 18.5kWh battery, and a dedicated hybrid transmission. Two variants will be offered: the DHT160, producing 160kW and 275Nm of torque, and the higher-output DHT230, delivering 260kW and 330Nm of torque.

Both versions are anticipated to provide an all-electric range of between 90-100km. A regular 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine will also be available in some markets.

Claimed to offer genuine off-road capability, the Tiggo V provides up to 220mm of ground clearance, allowing the PHEV version to wade through water up to 700mm deep. The combustion version can navigate water up to 650mm in depth.

The transforming Chery Tiggo V is set to enter production for Chinese buyers later this year. However, its availability in Australia has yet to be confirmed. Instead, the Chinese brand has announced that the flagship SUV/ute that will sit above the Tiggo 5, 7, 8, and 9 remains under consideration for the Australian market.
