Brandon Smith’s comeback timeline unveiled, replacement confirmed

Brandon Smith’s Ongoing Struggles with Injuries

Brandon Smith’s challenging journey with injuries continues to unfold, particularly with a timeline being set for his calf injury following South Sydney Rabbitohs’ victory over the Melbourne Storm on Anzac Day last week. The situation has raised concerns among fans and team officials alike, as Smith’s return to form has been marred by recurring setbacks.

Smith had shown promise in his recent performances against the Raiders and the Dragons during his return fortnight. This came after he overcame another preseason calf injury, which had kept him sidelined for an extended period. However, his latest setback has once again thrown a spanner in the works, as reported by various sports outlets.

According to recent updates, Smith is expected to miss a month of action after being forced off the field prematurely last Saturday. This marks another chapter in his ongoing battle with the same calf injury that had previously kept him out of the game for several weeks during the preseason. Coach Wayne Bennett provided an update on the Kiwi international, expressing his disappointment at the news.

“He’s pretty disappointed, to be honest with you, he’s out for another month,” Bennett told the media on Saturday. “He loves to play and he brings a lot to the team. But we all have our disappointments so he’s got to handle it.”

Adam Elliot Steps In

With Smith sidelined, Adam Elliot will step into the breach, having also been working through a lingering calf problem throughout the early weeks of the season. Elliot’s move to South Sydney was motivated by a desire to prove himself in the NRL after an injury-plagued year with the Newcastle Knights in 2025.

After joining the Rabbitohs on a one-year deal, Elliot aims to bolster their forward pack and seize the opportunity to showcase his skills on the field once again. His first chance to do so will come when the team faces the Knights on Sunday, a match that promises to be a significant test for the new recruits.

“Adam hasn’t played for the latter period of last year and we’re seven or eight weeks into the season and he’s getting his first game,” Bennett said. “I admire them (players) for how they persevere and want to be back and playing with their teammates.”

Key Players Returning for the Knights

The Knights are set to welcome back key players Kalyn Ponga and Bradman Best from injury, adding depth and experience to their lineup. This development could provide a much-needed boost for the team as they prepare to face the Rabbitohs.

As the season progresses, the focus will remain on how the Rabbitohs manage their injury challenges and how new additions like Elliot can contribute to the team’s success. With the support of their coaching staff and the determination of their players, the Rabbitohs are looking to build on their recent performance and continue their campaign in the NRL.
