Dog accidentally shoots person outside Nebraska convenience store as owner shops inside

A Dog’s Accidental Shot: A Bizarre Incident in Nebraska

A bizarre incident occurred outside a convenience store in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, when a dog accidentally shot someone. The event unfolded on Saturday afternoon and has since sparked an investigation by local authorities.

The Scottsbluff Police Department received a call around 12:07 pm regarding a shooting at the Short Stop convenience store located at 2002 Avenue I. Initially, officers were told that the incident involved a BB gun. However, upon arrival, they discovered that a shotgun had been fired instead.

When police arrived at the scene, they found a truck with a camper attached, and there was visible damage on the passenger-side door consistent with a shotgun blast. The truck’s owner had gone inside the store, while another person was standing outside near the passenger-side door.

At this point, the dog, which was sitting in the back seat of the truck, allegedly jumped from one side of the vehicle to the other. This action reportedly caused the dog to accidentally trigger a loaded shotgun inside the truck. The victim of the incident has not been identified.

In addition to the primary victim, a nearby woman was also injured by a pellet from the shotgun. She was stopped at a traffic light on Avenue I with her arm resting out of the window when she was hit in the upper right arm. The woman was taken to the Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff for treatment, but her injuries were not considered life-threatening.

The incident is currently under investigation by the Scottsbluff Police Department. According to Nebraska state law, it is illegal to travel with a loaded shotgun in a vehicle. Law enforcement emphasized the importance of firearm safety, stating that the incident serves as a reminder of the need for caution when handling, possessing, transporting, or maintaining any type of firearm.

This unusual event is not the first time a dog has been involved in a shooting. In November, a 53-year-old man in Pennsylvania was allegedly shot in the back by his dog. According to Shillington police, the man was cleaning his shotgun and had placed the firearm on the bed when his dog jumped up. The dog apparently saw this as an invitation to jump on the bed to be petted, resulting in the accidental discharge of the weapon.

The man was taken to the hospital for surgery following the incident. Law enforcement described the shooting as unusual but believed it was accidental. It was speculated that the dog’s paw may have gotten caught in the trigger with the safety off.

While such incidents are rare, they highlight the potential dangers associated with firearms and the importance of proper safety measures. As the investigation into the Nebraska incident continues, it serves as a reminder of the need for vigilance and responsibility when handling weapons.
