Popovic: No Risk in Volpato’s Call-Up

A New Chapter for the Socceroos

The Australian men’s national football team, known as the Socceroos, is set to welcome a new face in their World Cup squad. Cristian Volpato, a 22-year-old attacking midfielder who has recently switched his allegiance from Italy to Australia, has been approved by FIFA to join the team. This decision marks one of the most significant selections in the history of the national team.

Volpato’s Journey and Decision

Volpato, born and raised in Sydney, had previously turned down the opportunity to play for the Socceroos during the 2022 World Cup. In March, he expressed his desire to wait for an invitation from Italy, following a visit from coach Tony Popovic and his assistant Paul Okon. However, after missing out on Italy’s recent squads for matches against Luxembourg and Greece, Volpato decided it was time to commit to representing Australia.

He has even updated his Instagram profile to include @Socceroos and shared a photo of himself at Sydney Airport, indicating his readiness to join the team. His decision to switch allegiances has sparked excitement among fans and teammates alike.

Coach Popovic’s Perspective

In his first public comments since the news of Volpato joining the Socceroos broke, Popovic emphasized that the process was initiated by Volpato’s own decision to represent Australia. He stated that there was no pressure from the coaching staff to change his mind, and that they have always respected his choices as a player.

Popovic highlighted that the primary focus was ensuring that Volpato would be eligible to play in the World Cup. “When you have a talented player, I’m not sure what the risk is,” he said. Despite the late arrival of Volpato, Popovic believes the decision was worth taking.

A Welcome Addition to the Squad

Harry Souttar, a defender in the Socceroos, expressed confidence that Volpato will be welcomed into the team without any issues. “From what I’ve seen, he’s a very good player and he’s going to be here on merit,” Souttar said. He noted that many players in the team have represented different countries in various age groups, and that Volpato’s decision should not cause any problems.

Souttar also mentioned that the team is excited to meet Volpato and integrate him into their training. “He’s going to make us a better team, simple as that.”

Preparing for the World Cup

The Socceroos are preparing for their upcoming matches, with a friendly against Mexico scheduled at the Rose Bowl Stadium in Los Angeles. More than 75,000 tickets have already been sold, making this match a crucial dress rehearsal for their Group D showdown with the United States on June 19 in Seattle.

Popovic expressed his appreciation for the support from fans and the significance of the venue. “This stadium is so special, and the fans and the opponent will make it feel so real,” he said. “We’re honoured to be here and we want to show how good we are.”

The Socceroos will open their tournament against Turkey on June 14 at the BC Place in Vancouver, marking the start of their journey in the World Cup. With Volpato’s addition, the team is looking forward to a strong performance and showcasing their talent on the global stage.
