Cartagena: Europe’s Sunniest Hidden Gem – Flights from £47

The United Kingdom has recently experienced some high temperatures, but the weather appears to be shifting. If you’re seeking more sunshine, a recent study has identified the best European destinations to enjoy the sun.

According to research conducted by the holiday rental platform Holidu, the top spot for sunshine in Europe is an underrated port city located in the southeastern region of Spain. Cartagena stands out with an impressive average of 282 hours of sunlight per month, and temperatures typically hover around 19.1°C, reaching up to 29°C during the summer months of July and August.

The study examined data from World Weather Online, focusing on cities across Europe with populations exceeding 200,000. Researchers then calculated each city’s overall monthly average by extracting the number of sun hours per month from 2009 to 2026. It’s no surprise that the top five spots were all occupied by Spanish cities.

In addition to visiting Cartagena, those looking to maximise their Vitamin D intake can also consider destinations such as Alicante, Malaga, Seville, and Murcia, which complete the list of the sunniest places in Europe.

What to do in Cartagena

Cartagena, a coastal city in Spain’s Murcia region, offers a wealth of experiences. Known for its rich history and stunning architecture, it often remains overshadowed by larger cities like Madrid or Barcelona. However, it has been praised as ‘underrated’ and a ‘hidden gem’ on social media platforms.

One of the city’s main attractions is the well-preserved Roman theatre, constructed between 5 and 1 BCE. This theatre had a capacity for over 6,000 people and was used for theatrical performances during the time of Ancient Rome. The theatre features a museum with an entrance fee of just €7 (£6). It holds a 4.5-star rating on Tripadvisor, with visitors describing it as ‘stunning’ and ‘worth every penny.’

Beyond the theatre, Cartagena is home to several other historic landmarks. The Castillo de la Concepción, a castle situated on a hilltop, offers breathtaking views of the city below. For a more relaxed experience, a few kilometres away from the city lies Playa Cala Cortina, a picturesque cove surrounded by steep cliffs and lush greenery.

Other attractions include the Punic Wall, a defensive wall dating back to the 3rd century BC, and the Naval Museum, where visitors can learn about the city’s maritime history.

How to get to Cartagena

The nearest airport to Cartagena is Murcia International Airport (RMU), approximately a 30-minute drive from the city. If you’re planning a visit, return flights from London to Murcia can be found on Skyscanner for as little as £47 in July 2026. Flights usually depart from Luton or Stansted airports.

From there, you can take a 35-minute bus ride or choose a taxi, although the latter option is more expensive.

When is the best time to visit Cartagena?

The hottest months in Cartagena are July and August, with temperatures often peaking at 29°C. While considered an underrated city, it still attracts a significant number of visitors during the summer.

If you prefer a stress-free trip, the shoulder seasons—spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October)—are ideal. You’ll still enjoy pleasant weather, but with fewer crowds.
