A Journey Back in Time with HX Expeditions
The 19th century was a golden era for exploration. From John Hanning Speke discovering the source of the Nile to Sir Robert McClure’s discovery of the Northwest Passage, it was also the beginning of the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. Today, you can experience this remarkable period through a unique offering by HX Expeditions.
The 1896 Cabin: A Step Back in History
HX Expeditions has launched a limited-edition cabin that transports guests back to the 1896 era. This cabin, located on the MS Fridtjof Nansen, is designed to mirror the aesthetics of the DS Lofoten, which made history as the world’s first expedition cruise 130 years ago.
The design of the cabin is meticulously crafted to reflect the style of 1896, without compromising on modern luxury. Guests can expect:
- Wooden wall planks, ceiling beams, and flooring
- An old-fashioned wooden toilet seat
- Vintage maritime décor, including bunk beds and wooden chests
- A hidden bar located inside a barrel
- A scent pod that combines the aroma of salt air and aged wood to evoke the atmosphere of the time
“This cabin was always meant to honour our origins, and sometimes the journey to create something meaningful mirrors the journeys we undertake at sea,” said Gebhard Rainer, CEO of HX Expeditions.
Experiencing the 1896 Cabin
The 1896 Cabin is available as an optional upgrade for €100 per night per person on voyages aboard the MS Fridtjof Nansen throughout 2026. However, it is only available for one night per guest per sailing, so booking quickly is essential.
Guests can secure their spot either through the HX app or by contacting the reception on board. For those who miss out on booking the cabin, it will still be open for viewing during each voyage. Additionally, historians on board will offer talks about HX’s early heritage, providing a deeper understanding of the company’s rich history.
Why Choose the 1896 Cabin?
This unique accommodation offers more than just a place to sleep—it provides an immersive experience into the past. The attention to detail in the design and the thoughtful inclusion of sensory elements like the scent pod make it a truly memorable stay.
For those who appreciate history and want to feel connected to the explorers of the 19th century, the 1896 Cabin is an unforgettable choice. Whether you’re booking for a night or simply visiting, the cabin offers a glimpse into a bygone era that continues to inspire adventurers today.
