Understanding the Importance of Comprehensive Travel Insurance
Holidaymakers are faced with a wide range of travel insurance options, and choosing the wrong policy could leave them without coverage when they need it most. With recent events such as flight cancellations and fears of fuel shortages due to conflicts in the Middle East, families are now more cautious about their travel insurance choices.
It’s easy to assume that all insurers offer similar levels of coverage, but there is actually a significant difference between the best and worst policies. According to consumer group Which?, this disparity is quite pronounced, with some policies offering extensive protection while others provide minimal coverage.
Which? conducted an in-depth analysis of over 160 policies from 47 providers, revealing the best and worst coverage available. Here’s a checklist to help you make an informed decision before purchasing travel insurance.

Beware of Hidden Exclusions
One of the top policies for overall coverage is the Saga Plus Annual Multi-Trip, which received an impressive score of 82 per cent from Which? experts. This policy covers a wide range of scenarios, including terrorist incidents, anti-tourism protests, pandemics (excluding Covid-19), infectious diseases, missed departures for connecting flights, and items left unsecured in a locked hotel room.
Medical expenses are covered up to £20 million, and cancellation cover is up to £20,000. However, this policy is only available to those over 50 years old.
On the other end of the spectrum is the Just Travel Good2Go Extra Bronze, which scored just 21 per cent. It provides limited coverage, primarily for medical emergencies, with very little else included. This policy does not cover war, terrorism, civil unrest, anti-tourism protests, natural disasters, pandemics, or infectious diseases.
Sam Richardson from Which? emphasizes the importance of checking policy details carefully. He states, “It’s a dangerous assumption to think that all policies offer similar coverage. The differences in protection can be huge.”
Key Features to Look For
When searching for a travel insurance policy, especially during times of uncertainty, there are several key features to consider:
- Medical Coverage: Ensure your policy covers medical expenses up to at least £5 million, including emergency treatment and repatriation.
- Cancellation Costs: A good policy should cover at least £2,000 in cancellation costs. If your holiday is more expensive, look for a policy that covers the full amount.
- Baggage Cover: At least £1,500 in baggage cover is recommended to protect personal belongings if they are lost, stolen, damaged, or destroyed.
- Personal Liability: A minimum of £1 million in personal liability cover is essential to protect against accidental harm or damage to others.
- Additional Features: Consider cover for loss of passport, loss of cash, and dental emergencies.
Special Considerations
If you’re going on a sporting holiday, such as skiing, ensure your policy includes specific coverage for such activities. A standard policy may not cover these risks.
With current travel uncertainties, consider adding a travel disruption extension to your policy. This can provide coverage for cancellations due to acts of war or other unforeseen events.
Checking the Claims Process
Before purchasing a policy, always review the claims process. Even if the coverage seems comprehensive, an insurer that frequently rejects claims may not be reliable when you need it most.
According to the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), average claims acceptance rates for travel insurance were between 80 and 86 per cent in 2024. However, some insurers reject more than 30 per cent of claims.
By carefully reviewing the terms and conditions of your travel insurance policy, you can ensure that you have the necessary coverage for any unexpected situations.
