Idris Elba Clarifies His Position on James Bond Role
Idris Elba has long been a name associated with the possibility of becoming the next James Bond. For years, fans and media alike have speculated about whether the 53-year-old actor could take over the iconic role from Daniel Craig. However, in a recent interview, Elba has finally put an end to the speculation by stating that he was never in the running for the part and that the role has never truly interested him.
In an interview with People, Elba not only declines the role but also corrects the underlying assumption that he was ever considered for it. “My name’s not getting thrown out, no way,” he says. “They’re going younger. And I wish them all the luck of the world. I can’t wait; it’s going to be amazing.”
He adds without hesitation: “I’m honestly not in the race ever. I wasn’t in the race in the first place.” This statement serves as a clear message to fans who have hoped for years to see him portray 007. The rumors surrounding his potential casting began circulating as early as 2012 and have resurfaced repeatedly since then.
A Longstanding Discussion
Elba is no stranger to this conversation. In 2016, he expressed that he felt “too old” for the role and described the scale of the rumors as “the wildest in the world.” Two years later, he simply responded with a “no” when asked directly about Bond.
In 2023, he told the Smartless podcast that being mentioned in the context of Bond was “a huge compliment.” However, he added that when the debate began to focus on race, he found “the whole thing disgusting and off-putting.”
The rumors resurfaced again after Craig officially left the role following No Time to Die in 2021. Now, Elba seems ready to move on from the entire discussion.
Focusing on New Projects
Instead of dwelling on the Bond speculation, Elba has shifted his attention to his new project, Masters of the Universe, where he plays the character Duncan. “Masters of the Universe was my thing,” he tells People. “It was something that I watched a lot as a kid.”
He describes the role as an opportunity to bring his own interpretation to a character from his childhood. It is evident that this is where his current energy lies.

While Elba has stepped away from the conversation, the search for the next James Bond continues. Casting director Nina Gold, who previously oversaw recruitment for Star Wars and Game of Thrones, is now leading the effort.
