Stoke City Bolsters Coaching Ranks with High-Profile Appointment
Stoke City has announced a significant addition to their coaching staff, bringing in highly-rated 38-year-old Max Porter as the new assistant manager. Porter makes the move to the Bet365 Stadium after a successful tenure at Arsenal, where he progressed through the youth ranks to become the head coach of their Under-21 side.
Porter’s journey into coaching began after an early retirement from his playing career, which saw him feature in the lower leagues for clubs such as AFC Wimbledon, Newport County, and Barnet. He joined the Gunners in 2017, initially working with their Under-9s team. Over the years, he demonstrated a keen ability to nurture young talent, steadily climbing the ladder within Arsenal’s esteemed academy setup. His departure from the North London club marks the end of a seven-year stint.
At Stoke, Porter will work alongside experienced manager Mark Robins, who is aiming to guide the Potters to a more successful Championship campaign after their 17th-place finish last season. The appointment signals a clear intent from the club to strengthen their backroom operations and bring in fresh expertise.
A Bright Young Prospect Joins the Potters
Jonathan Walters, Stoke City’s Sporting Director, expressed his delight at securing Porter’s services. “Max arrives from one of the most elite and successful environments in the country, and we’re delighted to welcome him to Stoke City,” Walters stated. He highlighted Porter’s growing reputation within the footballing world.
“He has built a reputation as one of the brightest young coaches in the game and has played an important role in the development of a number of exceptional young players during his time at Arsenal,” Walters continued. The Sporting Director was particularly impressed by Porter’s personal attributes.
“What stood out to us was Max’s drive, energy and ambition. He is constantly looking to improve, challenge and develop those around him, and we believe he will be a tremendous addition to our environment,” he added.

Walters emphasised the strategic importance of this appointment as the club looks to build for the future. “As we continue to strengthen and add quality to our backroom staff, Max is another important appointment for the club, and we’re excited to see the impact he can make as we prepare for the season ahead.”
Arsenal’s Farewell and Recognition
Arsenal also issued a statement acknowledging Porter’s contributions. “During his time with us, Max helped provide a strong foundation for many of our young players as they prepared for their futures in senior football, alongside competing regularly in Premier League 2,” the club’s statement read.
The Premier League giants extended their gratitude to their departing coach. “Everyone at Arsenal would like to thank Max for his contribution to the club and wish him and his family all the best for the future.” This amicable parting underscores the positive impact Porter had during his tenure at the Emirates Stadium.

Robins’ Future Secured Amidst Club Ambitions
The arrival of Max Porter also brings a sense of stability regarding Mark Robins’ position as manager. There had been speculation surrounding Robins’ future at the end of the previous season, a sentiment he acknowledged himself.
Following the conclusion of the Championship season in May, Robins spoke about the uncertainty. “We’re in next week, we’ll have meetings no doubt, and we’ll speak with the hierarchy and see what happens from there,” he commented. He also pointed to external factors influencing club decisions.
“A lot of things are up in the air, not least the financial rules for the league and things like that. I think that will certainly have a bearing on what we eventually do or can do. But in the meantime, we’ll just get on and do what we can at this point.”
With the appointment of Porter as his assistant, it appears that Robins has the backing of the club’s hierarchy to continue leading Stoke City. This partnership between Robins and Porter is expected to usher in a new era of development and ambition for the Staffordshire club as they look to climb the Championship table. The blend of Robins’ experience and Porter’s modern coaching acumen from a top Premier League academy could prove to be a potent combination for Stoke City’s upcoming campaign.
