England Camp Update: Tuchel Addresses Player Fitness and Leadership Ahead of Costa Rica Clash
As the England squad gears up for their upcoming match against Costa Rica, manager Thomas Tuchel provided an update on the team’s fitness and leadership dynamics during a recent press conference. While the pre-camp atmosphere has been described as relaxed, and direct answers on more pressing World Cup concerns were somewhat elusive, a notable point of discussion arose regarding the fitness of rising star Bukayo Saka.
Saka, alongside three other Arsenal teammates, joined the squad later than usual due to their involvement in the Champions League final. England’s coaching staff will be closely monitoring his progress, with a plan to gradually “build him up” to ensure he’s at peak performance for the start of the tournament. Tuchel highlighted that a minor injury Saka sustained in March, which he managed through the latter part of the club season, will necessitate a degree of caution.
“We still have to take a little bit of care for Bukayo who had an injury in March and carried it through to club,” Tuchel explained. “He made himself available at the end of the season and did so brilliantly but he was managed in between matches; that continues a bit at the moment. We are building him up.”

In contrast to Saka’s situation, the other Arsenal contingent – Noni Madueke, Eberechi Eze, and Declan Rice – are reported to be “100%” fit and are expected to feature in Wednesday’s fixture against Costa Rica.
Rice’s Rise to Vice-Captaincy: Football IQ and Leadership Qualities
Declan Rice, in particular, drew praise from Tuchel, who elaborated on the midfielder’s exceptional football intelligence and the qualities that have earned him the vice-captaincy. Tuchel outlined the team’s leadership structure, which comprises a core group of five or six players who act as captains even without the armband.
“We have a leadership group of five or six players – you can call them captains without armbands,” Tuchel stated. “Declan and Harry [Kane] are the two guys with the armband. Harry is our captain – no doubt about it. And Declan is our second captain. When Harry wasn’t in camp and didn’t play against Wales, we had a choice, and it was a very quick one from me to give it to Declan.”
The manager further elaborated on Rice’s attributes:
- High Football IQ: This allows him to understand and influence the team’s tactical setup and rhythm.
- Structural Awareness: He plays a key role in maintaining the team’s formation and adapting to game situations.
- Consistent Performance: Rice has enjoyed two outstanding seasons with Arsenal, establishing himself as a vital player.
- European Class: Tuchel considers him among the top midfielders in Europe currently, possessing significant confidence.
“He has a high football IQ. He takes care of the formation and structure, the adaptation, and the rhythm of our game. He’s had two outstanding seasons with Arsenal – one of their main players in their Champions League campaign. He’s one of the best midfielders in Europe at the moment, full of confidence. That’s why he is my vice-captain.”

Stones Declared Fit and Ready for Action
Amidst queries from journalists about potential injury concerns, John Stones was another player whose fitness was addressed. Tuchel definitively confirmed that the former Manchester City defender is available and ready to start.
“He [Stones] feels very, very good. He feels fully competitive,” Tuchel asserted. “He hasn’t played a lot of minutes – not as many as we would have liked – but he was available all season and that’s a big difference. He wasn’t injured much, he has trust in his body, and most importantly, he did very well for us when he was in the camp.”
Tuchel highlighted Stones’ multifaceted contributions to the team:
- High-Level Defender: He possesses the quality and experience to perform at the highest level.
- Versatility: Stones can seamlessly transition into midfield roles and is comfortable in build-up play.
- Adaptability: He can fluidly switch between different formations, offering tactical flexibility.
- Winning Mentality: As a proven winner, he understands the demands of elite competition.
- Character: Beyond his on-field prowess, Tuchel described Stones as a “nice person – friendly and humble,” completing his impressive profile.
“He offers a lot as a player at the highest level and is a defender of the highest quality. He can step into midfield, he’s confident in build-up, and he can switch between different formations fluidly. He’s a proven winner – he knows what it takes to win. On top of that, he’s a very nice person – friendly and humble. That’s the full package. I’m very happy he arrived in a calm state of mind. The best news is that he’s training every session – he’s ready to go.”
