Matt Reeves’ ‘The Batman‘ universe is set to expand. However, one of its most beloved characters, The Penguin, will only have a small role in the next installment. Surprisingly, Colin Farrell couldn’t be happier about it.
Colin Farrell Calls ‘The Batman Part II’ Script A “Genre Masterpiece”

While promoting Sugar season 2, Farrell recently revealed that his role as the Penguin, aka Oz Cobb, is extremely limited in The Batman Part II. The actor, however, after reading the entire script, made it clear that the lesser screen time has only made him more confident in the sequel.

Farrell said that he has read the entire script penned by Matt Reeves and Mattson Tomlin and that it is a dark, emotional tale that had a significant impact on him. The sequel is “terrifying” at times, but also has a lot of psychological depth and emotional weight. Farrell said that Reeves has created something that’s more like a modern genre masterpiece than a typical comic-book blockbuster.
“I got to read from the first to last page and it’s really magnificent. I just think Matt Reeves is brilliant and he wrote, not only tonally, a really kind of dark and at times terrifying piece, and not only psychologically weighty and nuanced, but really feeling,” he told SR.
This is especially impressive considering the fans’ wait since 2022’s ‘The Batman’. However, if Farrell’s words are any indication, then Reeves is looking to go even higher and deeper this time around.
Penguin Steps Back As Gotham’s Next Threat Emerges

Farrell’s accolades were effusive, but his biggest surprise might have been the fact that Penguin makes only two appearances in the entire film. “I’m only in two scenes, which is great because it means I can enjoy the rest of the film,” he added.

It’s a big change for a character that not only starred in ‘The Batman’ but also in the Emmy-winning ‘The Penguin’ series on HBO. Reeves’ decision points to a focus on other big names in Gotham. There have been some rumors that Harvey Dent might be a major part of the sequel, which would lead to the emergence of Two-Face.
If those reports are true, then it would be a reason for the reduction of Penguin’s role even though the character is popular. Nevertheless, Farrell’s words should put fans at ease. He didn’t sound disappointed, he sounded like he was really excited about the direction the film is going in. ‘The Batman Part II’ is now in production and excitement is mounting.
