Tomb Raider Halted as Lead Star Injured

Production Halted on New Tomb Raider Series

Production on the new Tomb Raider series has been temporarily halted due to an injury sustained by the lead star. The details surrounding the incident remain unclear, but it is believed that Sophie Turner, who plays Lara Croft, may have suffered a minor injury while working on the show.

Sophie Turner, known for her role in Game of Thrones, has previously spoken about the physical demands of preparing for the role. The action-packed series is expected to debut in 2027. A spokesperson from Amazon MGM Studios confirmed that the injury is not severe and that production will resume as soon as possible.

It is possible that the injury was related to a pre-existing back issue that Sophie discovered during her training last year. In January, she revealed that she had been training for eight hours a day, five days a week, throughout most of 2025. This rigorous schedule was necessary to prepare for the physically demanding role.

On the Julia Cunningham Show, Sophie shared that the preparation for the series was particularly challenging because she had never worked out before. She explained, “I also realized that it’s much easier to build muscle if you’ve worked out before in your life, which I never had. So it’s taken me months and months and months to get into good shape.”

The Tomb Raider series began filming in January and features a stellar cast, including Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, Martin Bobb-Semple, and Jack Bannon.

Sigourney Weaver will portray Evelyn Wallis, a character described as a “high-flying woman who is keen to exploit Lara’s talents.” Jason Isaacs will take on the role of Lara’s uncle, Atlas DeMornay.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the series creator and showrunner, expressed her excitement about the project. “Tomb Raider boasts a plethora of iconic characters. I am thrilled to have been able to bring some personal and fan favourites to the screen while also introducing a few new rascals of our own to the mix. This cast is beyond my wildest dreams!”

The Tomb Raider franchise first debuted as a video game in 1996 and has seen several revivals over the years. The archaeologist-adventurer Lara Croft was portrayed by Angelina Jolie in the 2001 film and by Alicia Vikander in the 2018 movie, which received mixed reviews.

Two new video games, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis and Tomb Raider: Catalyst, are set to be released in 2026 and 2027, respectively. These upcoming titles are expected to further expand the Tomb Raider universe and build anticipation for the new series.
