New Changes to Public Transport in NSW
New South Wales is set to introduce a major change that will make it easier for concession cardholders and pensioners to use public transport. The new system allows these individuals to use credit or debit cards, mobile phones, or other digital devices on all forms of public transport across the state.
Previously, passengers had to rely on a physical Opal card to access discounted fares and weekly caps. This change marks a significant shift towards a more modern and convenient way of managing travel expenses.
Gradual Rollout Starting April 16
The upgrade will be implemented gradually from April 16. According to the government, nearly 1 million passengers will benefit from this new system. During a recent press conference, Minister for Transport John Graham highlighted that the first phase of the rollout will include 70,000 students who will be able to link their concession travel to their phone.
This initial phase is just the beginning of a broader program called “Opal next gen,” which aims to modernize the entire public transport system in NSW.
Benefits for Seniors and Pensioners
Mr. Graham explained that the upgrade is designed to help concession cardholders and pensioners reach the weekly Opal cap more easily. Government data showed that many individuals were not hitting the threshold for discounted travel, possibly because they were using electronic devices instead of their physical Opal cards.
For adults, the weekly cap is currently set at $50, while for concessions, children, and young people, it is $25. Seniors and pensioners have a daily cap of $2.50.
“We know that people are not hitting the cap and the reason … they might be using an electronic device, [because] they’ve got the physical Opal card down the back of the couch,” Mr. Graham said.
How to Access the New System
NSW Secretary of Transport Josh Murray encouraged concession holders to visit the transport website to take advantage of the new features. He explained that the process is simple and involves linking a credit card or digital device to their account.
“you will need to link the credit card or the device that you would like to use to your account,” he said. “And it just requires you to have your concession details with you when you sign up.”
Impact on Students and Apprentices
In a statement, Minister for Skills, TAFE and Tertiary Education Steve Whan emphasized the positive impact of this upgrade on students and apprentices. He noted that every dollar counts for those who are studying, training, or starting out in their careers.
“This upgrade makes it easier to access the concessions people are entitled to,” Mr. Whan said. “Our government is focused on making life easier and more affordable for people, gaining skills and training for the jobs of the future.”
