Ashwin’s Big Insight on Ruturaj Under Pressure

Chennai Super Kings’ Struggles Continue in IPL 2026

Chennai Super Kings faced another setback in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season, as they fell to Sunrisers Hyderabad by 10 runs in a high-stakes match held in Hyderabad. The defeat further highlighted the team’s inconsistent performance and raised questions about their batting lineup and leadership.

The match saw Sunrisers Hyderabad post a formidable total of 194/9, thanks to quickfire half centuries from Abhishek Sharma and Heinrich Klaasen. In response, Chennai Super Kings managed to score 184/8, but failed to reach the target despite a strong start during the powerplay.

Excellent Start Wasted by CSK

One of the key moments in the game was the exceptional start provided by young Ayush Mhatre, who delivered a powerful performance right from the beginning. He scored 30 runs off just 13 balls, putting immense pressure on the Sunrisers Hyderabad bowlers early in the chase. This strong powerplay gave CSK a great opportunity to build momentum.

However, after Mhatre’s dismissal, the momentum shifted, and the team struggled to maintain consistency. Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin pointed out that this was an ideal moment for captain Ruturaj Gaikwad to step up and make a statement with the bat.

Ashwin said:

“That was the ideal time for him to get runs. He wasn’t in a situation where he had to go and take risks or score at a quick rate. With the start Ayush Mhatre got, they were just running away with the powerplay and you have to say that it was there for Ruturaj to perhaps just hang around, score a few runs and get himself back into form.”

He also noted that the second ball after Mhatre’s dismissal was a crucial one, and it was difficult to get the ball away on the pull. Ashwin added:

“I just feel that he is under a lot of pressure at the moment and his thought process is somewhat jumbled up.”

The Lack of Form of the Captain

Ruturaj Gaikwad’s poor form has been a major concern for Chennai Super Kings. So far in the tournament, he has managed only 82 runs from six matches, averaging 13.67 with a strike rate of 112.33. His inability to convert starts into substantial scores has left the team struggling to find stability in their batting order.

The Bowlers Are the Real Heroes of SRH

While CSK faltered in the middle of the innings, the real heroes of the match were the Sunrisers Hyderabad bowlers. Eshan Malinga played a pivotal role, taking three wickets for SRH at an economy rate of 7.25. His ability to restrict the opposition and bowl with precision was instrumental in securing the victory.

SRH Bowling Coach Varun Aaron praised Malinga’s performance, calling him the unsung hero of the team. He said:

“Eshan Malinga is a very underrated bowler. Since the beginning of the campaign, he has bowled really well. He becomes even more dangerous in death overs when the ball starts reversing. He is able to bowl at speeds around 145kph, with an awesome bouncer and the best yorker. He is a sheer T20 bowler with all-round abilities. In my opinion, he can even start the bowling for us, let alone for the Sri Lanka team.”

Aaron also spoke about Praful Hinge, the young bowler who has shown contrasting performances in his two games so far. He said:

“We all have watched the IPL over the years and it has been a perfect example of it. You might have picked up 3 wickets in the very first over like Praful Hinge has done in his maiden game, and then give away 15 runs in an over on another occasion, but learning such experiences are a part of the game.”

He concluded:

“He has been witness to two extreme examples in two games only. A bowler might have been unable to bowl well in 3 overs, but then show a good character to bowl well in the death overs, even under pressure, that’s what I am trying to say. I think he is there to stay for SRH.”

CSK’s Struggles Continue

With this loss, Chennai Super Kings continue to struggle for consistency, and questions about their batting and leadership remain unanswered. The team needs to regroup quickly if they are to turn their season around in the coming matches.
