Dana White Teases McGregor’s UFC Comeback After 5-Year Hiatus

The Last Time Conor McGregor Faced Adversity

Conor McGregor’s last appearance in the UFC octagon took place on July 10, 2021. During UFC 264, the former two-division champion faced Dustin Poirier and was defeated via TKO after suffering a broken tibia following a rolled ankle in the first round of the bout. This loss marked the second time in seven months that McGregor had been knocked out by Poirier, who previously defeated him in the second round of their UFC 257 main event.

Since then, McGregor has been focused on making a comeback to the octagon. Many speculated that his return would come against Michael Chandler, as they had coached against each other on Season 31 of “The Ultimate Fighter” in 2024. However, the fight was ultimately canceled when McGregor suffered a broken toe while promoting the matchup.

A Potential Comeback on the Horizon

A year-and-a-half later, it seems that McGregor’s return could be announced soon, according to UFC president Dana White. During a recent UFC press event, a reporter asked White about updates on McGregor’s possible return. White responded with optimism, stating, “It’s looking good. Believe me, you know once we get a deal done with him, we will announce it.”

McGregor had previously expressed interest in being part of the UFC Freedom 250 card at the White House in July. He even claimed that his bout with Chandler was supposed to take place then, but the UFC kept changing its mind. “I was up for the White House — I know the administration was strong for me to be [on the White House card],” McGregor said. “It was supposed to be McGregor vs. Chandler — the story was built in, Chandler is a stand-up guy, he’s electric in the cage, he always brings it. It would have been dynamite.”

The main event of the White House card will feature Ilia Topuria facing Justin Gaethje for the lightweight championship, while the co-main event will see Alex Pereira take on Ciryl Gane for the interim heavyweight championship.

McGregor’s Future Plans

Despite the setbacks, McGregor remains optimistic about his return. He hinted that he would be interested in coming back during International Fight Week from July 9 to 12, though he is not picky about when or who he fights upon his return.

“I’m still here in this limbo,” McGregor stated. “… I hope a respectable offer comes through. I’m notoriously good to deal with. I’m an honest man, I admire fairness, and I’m sure we can get it done.”

Looking Ahead

As the UFC continues to build its schedule for the upcoming events, fans are eagerly awaiting any official announcement regarding McGregor’s return. With his history of high-profile fights and intense rivalries, any potential matchup involving McGregor is sure to generate significant excitement among fans.

While the details of his next fight remain uncertain, one thing is clear: McGregor is determined to make his return to the octagon and prove that he is still a force to be reckoned with in the world of mixed martial arts.
