A New Mysterious Statue in Central London Sparks Debate
A new statue has appeared in central London, igniting a debate about whether it could be the work of the renowned street artist Banksy. The mysterious figure was discovered in Waterloo Place on Wednesday morning, seemingly placed there overnight. At the base of the statue, the signature “Banksy” is visible, though the artist has not officially confirmed its authorship.
The statue features a man marching off the edge of a plinth while holding a flag that completely covers his face. It is located along Pall Mall, near the Athenaeum Club and the Crimean War Memorial. The 25-foot artwork is positioned directly in front of a golden Athena statue, adding to the intrigue surrounding its placement.
The structure appears to have been assembled using prefabricated sections, suggesting a well-planned installation. Commuters who spotted the statue on Wednesday morning were quick to take photographs, as news spread that the signature at the base might be genuine Banksy.
The artwork seems to carry a political message, depicting a politician or official blinded by patriotism and walking directly into danger. This aligns with Banksy’s usual themes, which often incorporate political or justice-based metaphors.
Despite the signature, Banksy has not yet claimed the statue. He typically announces his works through his Instagram channel. However, none of his recent murals have been signed. For example, his last artwork, a mural on the side of a skyscraper in central London, depicted a child lying next to another person pointing up to the building and sky above. This piece was also unsigned.
Previous Works and Controversies
The statue appeared on December 22 last year beneath the Centre Point building near Tottenham Court Road. It showed a child in a beanie hat and Wellingtons lying on the floor next to another person in a bobble hat. The same artwork was also displayed on the side of a building a few miles away in Queen’s Mews in Bayswater.
In September, a Banksy mural depicting a protester on the floor holding a blood-spattered placard while a judge hit him with a gavel appeared on the front of the Royal Courts of Justice building. The artwork was quickly covered up by officials, with security guards patrolling in front of a screen concealing it.
This mural followed a significant event where almost 900 people were arrested during a demonstration supporting the banned group Palestine Action, believed to be Britain’s largest mass arrest.
Notable Moments in Banksy’s Career
One of Banksy’s most striking moments occurred in 2003 when he disguised himself as a pensioner and installed a piece in a vacant spot in the Tate Britain in London. His artwork “Girl With Balloon” self-destructed in a Sotheby’s London saleroom when it descended into a shredder in 2018.
Banksy, who began his iconic street art over 25 years ago, has sold his works for hundreds of thousands of pounds. His identity has remained a mystery until The Mail on Sunday launched an investigation in 2008, naming Robin Gunningham as the Bristol artist. However, his identity remains unconfirmed.

The Daily Mail has contacted Banksy’s team for further information.
