“Shameful Moment”: Pundits Rant Over Longest Frame at Crucible

A Historic and Unusual Frame at the Crucible

Mark Allen and Wu Yize created history during their World Snooker Championship semi-final on Friday, with their frame becoming the longest, “worst,” and “most bizarre” in Crucible history. The match lasted an astonishing one hour and 40 minutes, surpassing the previous record of 85 minutes set between Mark Selby and Yan Bingtao in 2022.

Allen had shown remarkable resilience after trailing 6-2 to the young and talented Wu, who is just 22 years old. He managed to win five frames in a row, taking the lead 7-2 and even scoring the highest break of the tournament so far with a 145. This performance was a testament to his skill and determination.

However, the next frame turned into a chaotic situation that left everyone in disbelief. The black ball became lodged in the right corner pocket, and with the remaining reds clustered closely around it, both players found themselves in a difficult position. They took turns tapping the reds closer to the black, creating a logjam that left the crowd in a state of excitement and confusion.

The atmosphere in the Crucible was electric as spectators cheered every shot, while referee Marcel Eckardt struggled to maintain control of the situation. John Parrott, speaking on BBC Sport, described the frame as something he had never seen before. “These reds are just glued to each other now … Come on ref, you’ve got to do something here. You’ve got to step in. This is just silly.”

Stephen Hendry also expressed his frustration with how the referee handled the situation. “The referee needs to call this, I’m afraid. In my opinion he should have called it a while ago … This is the dark side of snooker.”

After some intervention from fellow referee and tournament director Rob Spencer, Eckardt called the players together to warn them that he would call a re-rack unless they resolved the stalemate within their next three shots. “We were hoping the black was going to drop,” the referee explained to an exasperated Allen, who had no choice but to pot the black to keep the frame alive and protect his lead. This marked 56 minutes since the last pot.

Wu eventually managed to overcome the challenge, albeit comically fouling by potting the black into the same pocket that caused the issue. He won the frame, drawing the semi-final level at 7-7. Stephen Hendry referred to it as “the most ludicrous frame of snooker in Crucible history.”

After the match, six-time champion Steve Davis criticized the incident, calling it “an embarrassment to snooker – it must never happen again.” Kyren Wilson, who was in the studio alongside Davis, also expressed his disappointment. “I think Marcel Eckardt [the referee] should’ve called that a lot earlier. That game was going nowhere, quite painful – but the fight and determination from Mark Allen is still incredible.”

Reflections on the Incident

The unusual frame sparked a lot of discussion among fans and experts alike. It highlighted the unpredictable nature of snooker and the importance of referees in managing such situations. While the event was undoubtedly bizarre, it also showcased the tenacity and skill of the players involved.

Fans and commentators agreed that such incidents should be avoided in the future to maintain the integrity and flow of the game. However, the event will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the most unique in the history of the Crucible Theatre.

As the sport continues to evolve, it’s essential for all stakeholders to learn from such moments and ensure that the game remains fair, exciting, and enjoyable for everyone involved.
