A Dream Come True for the Gagai Brothers
Dane Gagai, a veteran of 323 NRL games and 16 seasons, has achieved almost everything in his rugby league career. However, one dream that has remained unfulfilled is playing alongside his brother, Jacob Gagai, at the club level.
Currently off-contract at the end of the season, Dane is reportedly open to leaving the Newcastle Knights. This has led to interest from Super League clubs, but Dane has made it clear that any move would only happen if it allows him to play with his brother.
Jacob, the younger of the two, is currently at the Huddersfield Giants, where he was named the club’s player of the year in his first season. He also had a stint with the South Sydney Rabbitohs in the NRL during the 2024 season, making 17 appearances and scoring nine tries.
Both brothers are set to be off-contract at the same time, with Dane still under contract with the Knights and Jacob with Huddersfield. This situation has sparked speculation about their future moves.
The Possibility of a Brothers’ Move
Despite the uncertainty, there are potential opportunities for both Gagai brothers to play together. However, this would require a club to have a need for two outside backs, which might not be common. The idea of a “two-for-one” package could be appealing for some teams looking to strengthen their squad.
While the possibility of a joint move remains speculative, Dane has expressed his commitment to continue playing beyond 2026. He assured fans and supporters that he has no intention of retiring anytime soon.
“I’ve spoken to my manager, and I’m not planning on stopping, I’m not planning on slowing down,” Dane said in an interview with the Newcastle Herald. “Like I’ve always said, it’s not just playing as long as I can, it’s whether I lose the passion for playing the game of footy and competing, or I just can’t physically keep up.”
Health and Passion Remain Key
Dane emphasized that his physical condition and passion for the game are still strong. He mentioned that he has never undergone any major operations and feels good both physically and mentally.
“Touch wood, I’ve never had any operations, body feels good, still moving well around the park, and the passion is still there,” he added.
This statement highlights Dane’s determination and dedication to the sport. His experience and skill set make him a valuable asset to any team, and his desire to continue playing suggests that he still has a lot to offer.
Looking Ahead
As the 2025 season approaches, the Gagai brothers’ futures remain uncertain. However, the possibility of them playing together continues to generate interest among fans and clubs alike.
Whether they stay with their current teams or move to new ones, the Gagai brothers are likely to remain in the spotlight. Their unique bond and shared love for rugby league make them a compelling story in the sports world.
For now, Dane Gagai is focused on his current commitments and ensuring that he continues to perform at the highest level. With his experience, talent, and passion, there’s no doubt that he will continue to make an impact on the field for years to come.
