Japanese brand slashes $4000 from EV prices

Subaru Joins the Electric Car Price War

Subaru has entered the electric car price war by slashing thousands off the prices of its Solterra and Trailseeker electric SUVs. This move is part of a growing trend among automakers to make electric vehicles more affordable as competition intensifies.

The Solterra range now starts at $61,990 (before on-road costs) for the base variant, a reduction of $2000. The range-topping Touring grade also sees a similar price cut to $67,990. This follows a previous $6000 price reduction in late 2023, along with added improvements.

The regular Solterra offers a driving range of 566km, while the Touring model provides 517km. Both models feature a dual-motor setup that delivers all-wheel-drive grip and produces 252kW and 337Nm of torque.

Trailseeker Makes Its Mark

The 2026 Subaru Trailseeker, a large electric SUV with a driving range of over 500km, is set to enter the Australian market. It aims to compete with the Toyota bZ4X Touring. The Trailseeker is expected to start at $63,990, rising to $69,990 for the Touring grade.

This model brings dual-motor performance, offering Subaru’s trademark all-wheel-drive grip. According to US versions, the two electric motors combine for 280kW and 537Nm, allowing the Trailseeker to accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in about 4.5 seconds.

At the heart of the Trailseeker is a circa-75kWh battery that delivers 533km of driving range in the base version and 488km in the Touring.

New EV Models Enter the Market

Subaru has also announced the arrival of its Uncharted compact electric SUV, which is its cheapest EV at $59,990. All three SUVs—Solterra, Trailseeker, and Uncharted—have been co-developed with Toyota. The bZ4X is equivalent to the Solterra, while the Trailseeker and Uncharted are the twin to the bZ4X Touring and C-HR+ EV. The latter is not yet on sale in Australia but is confirmed for a 2027 launch.

Subaru isn’t alone in this rush to sell EVs. Other brands such as Hyundai, Cadillac, Volvo, and Zeekr have also reduced the prices of some of their electric cars in recent months.

Intense Competition from Chinese Brands

New Chinese models like the GWM Ora 5, MG4 Urban, and BYD Atto 1 are lowering the entry price to electric motoring, forcing other manufacturers to be more competitive. This increased competition is pushing automakers to offer better value and features to attract buyers.

Sales Performance and Market Position

Despite these efforts, Subaru’s electric vehicle sales remain flat compared to its rivals. The Solterra sold just 324 units through the first four months of the year. In contrast, Tesla’s Model Y is the best-selling EV so far this year, with more than 6700 units finding new homes.

Subaru urges customers who have already placed an order to contact their dealer to see if the price reductions apply to them. The updated prices are effective from May 14th.
