Why Diana and Sarah Ferguson’s Friendship Ended

The Complex Relationship Between Princess Diana and Sarah Ferguson

New details have emerged about the strained relationship between Princess Diana and Sarah Ferguson, also known as Fergie. Royal author and historian Andrew Lownie has shared fresh insights into what led to the deterioration of their friendship, which was once close and deeply personal.

According to Lownie, the tension began after Fergie published her 1996 autobiography, My Story, where she made a comment about “catching a verruca [wart] from borrowing some shoes from Lady Diana.” This seemingly trivial remark, however, sparked deeper concerns for Diana. Lownie claims that Diana was worried Fergie might be selling stories about her, and the rift between them never truly healed, despite Fergie’s attempts to appear reconciled.

Shared Struggles and Growing Tensions

Lownie also revealed that both women often relied on each other to cope with the pressures of royal life. He described how Diana would visit Fergie every Sunday to vent about the royal family, expressing their shared feelings of restriction within the royal confines. However, there were underlying issues. Diana reportedly felt that Fergie was too boisterous and that her behavior could undermine Diana’s own reputation. As a result, Diana began to distance herself from Fergie.

Diana and Fergie had once been very close. In fact, the late princess even introduced Fergie to then-Prince Andrew, the younger brother of King Charles. Lownie claimed that Diana encouraged Fergie to proceed with divorcing Andrew while carefully observing how the royal family would react.

A Strategic Move and Its Consequences

The author suggested that Diana played a “tough trick” by advising both of them to separate from their husbands around the same time. However, according to Lownie, Diana later stepped back and let Fergie deal with the fallout alone. This experience, he said, helped Diana understand how to approach her own separation from Charles.

Ferguson and Andrew officially divorced in 1992 after 10 years of marriage. Despite the split, the former couple remained close for decades. They continued living together at Royal Lodge even after Andrew faced renewed public scrutiny over his ties to Jeffrey Epstein and lost several royal privileges in 2025.

A Turbulent Marriage and Tragic End

Meanwhile, Diana and Charles’ marriage began with the lavish “wedding of the century” in 1981. The pair separated in 1992 and finalized their divorce in 1996. Just one year later, Diana tragically died in a Paris car crash at age 36.

Years after her death, Prince William reflected on the heartbreaking loss of his mother and how grief impacted his childhood. He spoke about the difficulty of expressing emotions during such a painful time.

Grief and Emotional Support

“Sometimes the hardest thing about grief is finding the words for how you actually feel. It’s crucial for those first few years, particularly, [that] you have support like this. It’s got you in your practice, how to help yourself,” William explained. “The mind gets focused on one thing, doesn’t it? It’s very difficult to do school and normal life.”

He continued, “What my mother recognized back then — and what I understand now — is that grief is the most painful experience that any child or parent can endure.”

This reflection highlights the profound impact of Diana’s passing on her children and the importance of emotional support during times of loss.
