A Reunion of Old Friends
Denise Van Outen and Johnny Vaughan, once co-hosts of the iconic British TV show The Big Breakfast, have recently reconnected in a heartwarming way. The pair, who had a long-standing feud that lasted over two decades, were seen together on Instagram as they reunited to film Celebrity Gogglebox. Their friendship, which had been tested by contract disputes and personal differences, seems to be on the mend.
A History of Conflict and Reconciliation
The Big Breakfast originally aired on Channel 4 from 1992 to 2002 before returning briefly in 2021 and 2022. Denise and Johnny were known for their chemistry during their time on the show, but their relationship took a turn when they began negotiating contracts. Denise claimed that Johnny went behind her back to renegotiate his deal, which led to a rift between them.
Despite the tension, the pair eventually reconciled during the coronavirus lockdown. Denise reflected on this period, saying: “These situations make you reflect and realise some of the silly niggles and arguments you have are just not worth it.”
In 2017, Denise spoke about the fallout with Johnny on Loose Women. She described how their friendship had been strong at first, but things changed when they started renegotiating their contracts. “I always felt we worked together as a team and that’s how it should be,” she said. However, Johnny’s agent had other ideas, leading to disagreements that ultimately caused their friendship to drift apart.
Money and Misunderstandings
Denise confirmed that the main issue was money. “It was mainly to do with pay and a few other things,” she said. She also mentioned that she had income from acting on the side, which may have contributed to the tension. Despite the difficulties, Denise still holds affection for Johnny. “I loved him so much and I still do. When I see him now, he makes me laugh so much. I forget about it.”
In 2019, Denise revisited the topic on Natalie Pinkham’s In The Pink podcast. She described how their friendship had once been unbreakable, but the pressures of contract negotiations caused them to drift apart. “I wanted us to be a team and it became apparent we were not a team anymore,” she said.
A New Chapter Together
Johnny Vaughan has also spoken about their friendship, acknowledging that it was not easy. He told The Sun: “You can’t just have two people doing it, as we’ve seen from other male-female double acts doing daytime TV who seem to get along well, you also need a non-toxic team as well.” He clarified that he wasn’t criticizing anyone, but rather emphasizing the importance of a supportive team.
Their on-screen chemistry helped boost The Big Breakfast to record levels, but the show struggled after Denise left to pursue an acting career. Although she returned in 2000, the show never regained its former glory.
In 2008, Denise and Johnny were invited to co-host Capital FM’s breakfast show. Many expected their old bond to shine through, but instead, they faced a strained working relationship. Denise quit after just six months, halfway through her contract.
A New Beginning
In 2024, the pair shared an Instagram post that showed them smiling together. Denise captioned the photo: “Writing and planning @vanouten_denise @johnny_vaughan66 ‘To be continued’.” She also shared various photos of them having fun on the project, though she did not reveal what exactly it was.
