Tragic Incident at Roaring River Falls
A heartbreaking incident occurred at Roaring River Falls in Kings Canyon National Park when a California couple lost their lives after a tragic accident. The event unfolded on May 25 during Memorial Day Weekend, as Parth Patel, 30, and his wife, Dharti Patel, 29, of San Mateo, were visiting the popular waterfall on their way home.
Roaring River Falls is known for its powerful currents and has long been a destination for visitors seeking natural beauty. However, the location also comes with inherent dangers that have led to several incidents over the years.
According to reports, the tragedy began when Dharti was attempting to take photos at the top of the waterfall and slipped into the rushing water. Her husband, Parth, immediately jumped in to try and save her, but both were swept away by the strong currents. Witnesses on social media described the horror of the moment, with one Facebook user stating that the incident occurred around 4pm and that both individuals did not survive.
Search teams were quickly dispatched to the area, and social media users reported hearing ‘lots of sirens and a helicopter’ as rescue efforts were underway. Unfortunately, the powerful currents proved too much, and the couple could not be saved.
Roaring River Falls stands at 40 feet high, with water from snowmelt flowing down from higher elevations through a narrow chute. The waterfall is particularly strong during late spring and early summer when the snow melts in significant quantities. This makes the area even more dangerous, as the currents can become unpredictable and extremely powerful.
The National Park Service has issued warnings about the dangers of the area, emphasizing that the pool below the waterfall may appear calm and safe, but it is actually highly hazardous. The service states:
“Don’t be fooled if the pool appears calm and safe for swimming. The rocks are slippery and the currents below the surface of the water can easily drag you under.”
It also notes that drowning in rivers like this one is the most common cause of death in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. Additionally, the water can be surprisingly cold even during the hottest months due to its origin from melted snow. This temperature shock can lead to swimmers losing strength and drowning, even if they are experienced.
As the summer season approaches and visitation to national parks in California is expected to increase, safety experts and local authorities have provided important tips for those visiting areas near rivers and waterfalls.
Safety Tips for Visiting Waterfalls and Rivers
- Stay out of fast-moving water: These areas can be extremely dangerous and unpredictable.
- Keep a safe distance from the edge or banks: These areas can be slippery and may give way without warning.
- Keep a close eye on children: They may not fully understand the risks involved and can easily slip or fall.
If swimming is planned, the following precautions should be taken:
- Never swim alone: Always have someone nearby who can assist in case of an emergency.
- Wear proper footwear with grip: This helps prevent slipping on wet or rocky surfaces.
- Swim sober: Alcohol or drugs can impair judgment and reaction time.
- Consider wearing a life preserver: Especially when boating or in deeper water, this can provide additional safety.
