Hipwood’s return looms as Lions regroup for Tigers

Eric Hipwood’s Return Brings New Strength to Brisbane Lions

After a long recovery period, Eric Hipwood is set to make his return to the field, bringing with him a noticeable increase in strength and physicality. The Brisbane Lions are hoping that his return will provide the extra edge needed to maintain their push for a third consecutive premiership.

Hipwood has spent the last nine months recovering from knee surgery. The 28-year-old suffered a partial tear in his surgically repaired anterior cruciate ligament while rehabilitating from a separate calf injury. His comeback this weekend could come at either AFL or VFL level, as the Lions prepare to face Richmond in Hobart on Sunday. This follows a crucial win over Gold Coast on Saturday, which ended a three-game losing streak.

Lions co-captain Harris Andrews has praised Hipwood’s progress during his absence. “I’ve seen great energy, awesome intent,” Andrews said. “He’s a lot stronger than what he was. He’s a strong guy at the best of times but he’s put on good size.”

During Hipwood’s absence, Ty Gallop has made a significant impact, showing his versatility by performing well at both ends of the field. Meanwhile, West Coast recruit Oscar Allen found form alongside Logan Morris in the forward line before suffering a long-term foot injury.

Andrews believes Hipwood’s strengths will complement the team’s current strategy. “His best footy’s right up there… he’s so reliable and connects the play well when we move it,” he said. “Gets up to the wings, you look up and see him there producing a great contest and it enables others to play a bit closer to goal.”

If Hipwood plays, it will mark his 200th AFL game. Meanwhile, two-time premiership skipper and three-time All-Australian player Harris Andrews will reach his 250th game.

Andrews reflected on his career milestones, saying, “I haven’t thought about it too much, the last couple of weeks have just been about our team performance.” He added, “But to get to 250 games, I’m pretty proud of it. Early days, you try and make a name for yourself but get to a point where team performance is everything. I don’t think people are going to be celebrating my All-Australians with me in 20 years time, well be catching up as premiership teammates.”

Key Players and Their Contributions

  • Eric Hipwood: After a lengthy recovery from knee surgery, Hipwood returns to the team with increased strength and physicality. His presence is expected to add depth to the Lions’ forward line.
  • Ty Gallop: Stepped up during Hipwood’s absence, showing versatility and contributing significantly to both defense and attack.
  • Oscar Allen: Found form in the forward line before sustaining a long-term injury, impacting the team’s attacking options.

Looking Ahead

With Hipwood back in the lineup, the Brisbane Lions are poised to strengthen their bid for another premiership. The team’s recent win over Gold Coast has provided a much-needed boost, and the return of key players like Hipwood is expected to further enhance their performance.

As the season progresses, the focus remains on maintaining consistency and building momentum. With experienced players like Harris Andrews leading the way, the Lions are determined to continue their successful run and aim for another title.
