The World’s Most Beautiful Airports for 2026 Revealed
A list of the world’s most beautiful airports for 2026 has been released, highlighting remarkable architectural achievements from across the globe. This year’s selection features seven airports that have stood out for their innovative designs and aesthetic appeal. The list was compiled by Prix Versailles, an organisation known for hosting architectural competitions in various sectors, including railway stations, campuses, and arenas.
Each airport on the list was chosen for its extraordinary architectural ambition, showcasing a blend of functionality and beauty. The United States and India were the top performers, with two airports each making the cut. Other notable entries include airports from China, Germany, and Cambodia.
Pittsburgh International Airport: A Nature-Inspired Design
Pittsburgh International Airport was celebrated for its large undulating roofline, which mirrors the nearby Allegheny Mountains. The design is supported by 38 steel columns shaped like trees, reflecting the region’s forested landscape. Glass walls enhance the natural light within the space, creating a bright and welcoming environment. Additionally, four outdoor terraces currently under construction will provide passengers with areas to enjoy fresh air.

San Diego International Airport: A Curved Glass Facade
The other U.S. airport on the list is San Diego International Airport, specifically its Terminal 1 building. Its most striking feature is a 244-meter-long curved glass facade that allows natural daylight to flood the space while reducing heat and glare. The terminal also includes an innovative system that enabled the ticketing hall to be built without structural columns, resulting in a more open layout and a 30% reduction in the building’s carbon footprint.

Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport: Embracing Regional Identity
Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport’s Terminal 2 was also included in the list. Judges praised the airport for its ability to embrace the surrounding land magnificently, drawing inspiration from the “living spirit” of Northeast India. The building features sweeping vaulted bamboo ceilings in organic shapes, referencing Assam’s sacred landscapes and indigenous architectural traditions.

Navi Mumbai International Airport: A Fusion of Futurism and Tradition
Navi Mumbai International Airport Terminal 1, another Indian entry, combines futuristic architecture with organic motifs. Its ceiling, composed of geometric shapes, extends inward into a column, creating the illusion of giant lotus flowers supporting the roof. This design reflects both modernity and cultural heritage.

Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport Terminal 3: A Light-Filled Space
In China, Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport Terminal 3 made the list for its light-filled layout and fluid, organic curves. The terminal includes a sequence of terraces, atriums, and gardens, offering passengers pleasant spaces to relax during transit. It also houses the highest open-air public observation deck at a Chinese airport.

Techo International Airport: A Modular Roof Inspired by Tradition
Techo International Airport in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, was selected for its overarching roof canopy, which prioritises short walking distances from the drop-off zone to the boarding areas. The modular roof undulates, echoing the architecture of Cambodia’s palaces and temples. Inside, the ceilings are inspired by traditional basket weaving, appearing to be woven from bamboo and rattan.

Frankfurt Airport Terminal 3: A City-Inspired Design
Frankfurt Airport’s Terminal 3 was praised for being one of Europe’s largest infrastructure projects. Spanning 1.3 square kilometres, the terminal is designed to emulate the streets and squares of a city. Natural light bathes the spaces, creating a soothing atmosphere for passengers.

Insights from Prix Versailles
Jérôme Gouadain, secretary general of Prix Versailles, highlighted the significance of the selected airports. He noted that they resolve the conflict between the increasing frequency of travel and the need for speed, while also offering unique experiences that go beyond mere transfer spaces.
