Dane Gagai’s Return to Brisbane
Newcastle veteran Dane Gagai has decided to end his career where it all began, signing a one-year deal with the Brisbane Broncos. The 35-year-old is currently in top form, but the Knights were unable to offer him a new contract for 2027. This decision has led him back to the Broncos, the club he last played for in 2012, although his time there was cut short due to disciplinary issues.
Despite this early setback, Gagai’s career took a positive turn as he joined the Newcastle Knights under the guidance of Wayne Bennett. He later played under Bennett again at South Sydney before returning to Newcastle. Now, after a long and successful career, he is set to return to the Broncos for the 2027 season.
Gagai, who has played 328 NRL games, has been a key player for Queensland in 23 State of Origin matches and has represented Australia in seven Tests. His experience and skill make him a valuable addition to the Broncos, especially as the team looks to develop its young outside backs.
Brisbane recruitment boss Simon Scanlan expressed his excitement about Gagai’s return, highlighting his outstanding form this season and his ability to mentor younger players. “The Broncos are very excited to see Dane making a return to Red Hill in 2027,” Scanlan said. “His form this season has been outstanding and he has undoubtedly been one of the form centres this year. As we continue to develop our young outside backs, having experienced professionals around them is incredibly important. Dane’s leadership, professionalism and proven performance at the highest level make him a valuable addition to our club.”
Other Player Signings
In other news, Dolphins utility Jake Averillo has signed a four-year deal with the Wests Tigers starting in 2027. Averillo has been a key player for the Dolphins, playing in various outside back positions and in the halves. However, salary cap constraints prevented the Dolphins from matching the Tigers’ offer.
Gold Coast forward Klese Haas has also made headlines, extending his stay with the Titans until the end of 2029. This move means he will not be playing alongside his older brother Payne, who is set to join South Sydney next season from Brisbane.
Haas expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to stay with the Titans, stating, “Living on the Gold Coast basically my whole life, it means the world to me and my family to lock in a further two years here. I’d be lying if I said the temptation wasn’t there to play together with Payne, but at the end of day, this club has given me so much and I want to repay that faith here at the Titans. The upwards trajectory this club is going in is exciting to see and I can’t wait to keep being part of it.”
