Philadelphia is gearing up for a spectacular 2026-2027 Broadway season, promising a diverse lineup of critically acclaimed productions and beloved classics. Ensemble Arts Philly has unveiled a slate of 14 shows that will grace the stages of the Academy of Music, Miller Theater, and Forrest Theatre, featuring recent Tony Award winners, anniversary tours, fresh revivals, and exciting Philadelphia premieres.
A Season of Blockbusters and New Discoveries
The upcoming season kicks off with a bang at the Academy of Music, presenting the ABBA-fueled classic, Mamma Mia! from September 29 to October 4. Following this, audiences can immerse themselves in the Roaring Twenties with The Great Gatsby, a musical adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s iconic novel, running from October 20 to November 1. The month of November also brings BOOP! The Musical (November 17 to 29), a charming production celebrating the beloved cartoon character Betty Boop.
Spy Thrills and Percussive Wonders
The Forrest Theatre will host the Philadelphia premiere of Operation Mincemeat: A New Musical from December 15 to 20. This raucous World War II spy comedy is based on a true secret mission, promising a thrilling and humorous experience.
As the holiday season approaches, the Miller Theater will resonate with the unique sounds of STOMP from December 28 to January 3, 2027. This percussive powerhouse features eight performers who transform everyday objects, from lighters to hubcaps, into an unforgettable musical spectacle.
Alicia Keys’ Personal Journey and a Comedic Return
Fans of Alicia Keys will be treated to her semi-autobiographical musical, Hell’s Kitchen, at the Academy of Music from January 5 to 17, 2027. The show offers a heartfelt portrayal of Keys’ upbringing in Manhattan Plaza, a community that has historically been home to numerous celebrities. The musical garnered significant acclaim, earning 13 Tony Award nominations and winning two.
Following closely, The Book of Mormon, the Tony Award-winning comedic musical from the creators of South Park, makes a welcome return to Philadelphia. It will be staged at the Forrest Theatre from January 26 to 31, 2027, for those eager to laugh along with its irreverent humor.
Milestone Anniversaries and Hilarious Satire
Spring 2027 marks significant anniversaries for two enduring favorites. Riverdance 30 — The New Generation will celebrate three decades of captivating Irish dance at the Miller Theater from March 4 to 7, 2027. This special production features new choreography and a vibrant ensemble of young dancers.
Waitress, the beloved musical with a heartwarming story and original music by Sara Bareilles, returns to Philadelphia for its 10th anniversary. The show, which spotlights a pie-maker with ambitious dreams, will run from February 9 to 14, 2027, at the Academy of Music.
Prepare for uproarious laughter with Oh, Mary!, a highly anticipated production embarking on its first tour. This camp comedy, which earned Cole Escola a Tony Award for his hilariously unhinged portrayal of Mary, will have a limited run at the Miller Theater from March 9 to 14, 2027. The show cleverly satirizes history, focusing on Mary and Abraham Lincoln in the days leading up to the presidential assassination. Previous acclaimed actors like Tituss Burgess, Jinkx Monsoon, and Jane Krakowski have donned the role, with Maya Rudolph set to star on Broadway. The touring cast is yet to be announced.
Futuristic Romance and Rock Opera Revival
Another highly anticipated show is Maybe Happy Ending, a futuristic romance that swept the Tony Awards last year, securing six wins including Best Musical. Set in Seoul, the story follows two humanistic robots who discover love. It will play at the Academy of Music from March 23 to April 4, 2027.
The Forrest Theatre will host a revival of The Who’s Tommy, Pete Townshend’s seminal rock opera. This production, running from April 13 to 18, 2027, holds a special significance as the show’s original North American tour premiered there over 30 years ago.
A Modern Take on a Classic and Magical Farewell
The legendary Phantom of the Opera receives a fresh interpretation in Cameron Mackintosh’s staging at the Academy of Music from June 9 to 27, 2027. While remaining faithful to Andrew Lloyd Webber’s classic score, this iteration boasts updated scenic designs, incorporating new technology and pyrotechnics, along with revised choreography.
Rounding out the exhilarating 2026-2027 Broadway season is Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, running at the Academy of Music from July 28 to August 8, 2027. The production explores the unexpected friendship between the sons of Harry Potter and his former rival, Draco Malfoy, offering a magical conclusion to the season.
Frances Egler, vice president of theatrical programming and presentations at Ensemble Arts Philly, described the season as showcasing “the full spectrum of what Broadway is right now.” She emphasized that the lineup was curated to create a cohesive experience, blending large-scale blockbusters with acclaimed new works, allowing audiences to journey through spectacular, outrageous, nostalgic, and deeply personal narratives.
