Sperm Whale Mothers and Their Pods: A Rare Glimpse into Collaborative Births
In a remarkable display of animal behaviour, rare footage captured in 2023 has provided scientists with an unprecedented look into the complex social dynamics of sperm whales, particularly during the critical moments of birth. The video showcases female whales from different family lines working in unison to support a mother whale in labour and to help the newborn calf surface. This level of coordinated effort is exceptionally uncommon in the animal kingdom, typically observed only in primates like monkeys and humans.
Oregon State University behavioural ecologist Mauricio Cantor, who was not involved in the research, described the event as the group “quite literally helps bring the calf into the world.”
Studying the social interactions of whales in their natural, underwater environment presents significant challenges. Sperm whales, in particular, are large, elusive mammals, making direct observation of their social structures and behaviours difficult. Historically, documented records of sperm whale births are scarce, with only a handful of accounts existing over the past six decades, often derived from anecdotal evidence or observations made from whaling vessels.
The groundbreaking footage emerged several years ago when researchers were conducting whale communication studies off the Caribbean island of Dominica. Their attention was drawn to an unusual gathering of eleven whales, predominantly females, who surfaced with their heads oriented towards each other. They then began a series of vigorous thrashing and diving movements both above and below the water’s surface. Recognizing the significance of the event, the scientists promptly deployed drones and microphones to record the proceedings.
The entire birthing process spanned approximately 30 minutes. In the hours that followed, pairs of whales were observed diligently supporting the newborn calf, keeping it afloat until it gained the strength and ability to swim independently.
David Gruber, a co-author of the study and affiliated with the Cetacean Translation Initiative, or Project CETI, described the event as “really a special event.”
Following the observation, the research team developed sophisticated software to analyse the collected data, meticulously chronicling the visual and auditory aspects of the birth. Their findings have been detailed in two recent scientific publications, appearing in the journals Scientific Reports and Science.
A striking revelation from the research was the extent of communal support for the new calf. The study highlighted the involvement of numerous whales, including mothers, sisters, and even unrelated individuals, demonstrating a powerful collective effort. Sperm whales are known to live in tightly-knit, female-led societies, and these new observations underscore how these established social dynamics extend to their most significant and vulnerable life events.
Shane Gero, another co-author from Project CETI, expressed his awe at the animals’ ability to come together: “It’s amazing to think about how, when faced with this impossible challenge, these animals come together to succeed.”
Further analysis revealed that the whales emitted distinct vocalizations during key stages of the birth. These included slower, elongated series of clicks, which scientists speculate may have played a crucial role in communication, facilitating synchronisation and coordination among the pod members during the birthing effort.
These findings open up a wealth of new questions for marine biologists and ethologists. How do these groups of whales initially form? What prompts them to join forces for such an undertaking?
While definitive answers to these questions may take time to uncover, especially given the challenges of obtaining such rare video footage, the current research offers valuable insights into the complex and often hidden social lives of these magnificent marine mammals.
Biologist Susan Parks of Syracuse University, who was not involved in the studies, shared her enthusiasm: “I think it’s just exciting to think about the social lives of these animals.” The ongoing research promises to shed further light on the intricate communication and social bonds that define sperm whale societies.
