A New Direction for Marvel
Marvel is taking a bold step away from its traditional superhero action narratives. The studio is now exploring the integration of various genres, with Wonder Man standing out as a prime example of this creative shift. In a recent interview, Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton shared how he became involved in this new Marvel project.
From Joke to Reality
During a Deadline Contenders TV panel, the executive producer of Wonder Man revealed that the idea for the eight-part series, which is currently available on Disney+, originated from a “joke pitch.” While directing Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Cretton was captivated by Sir Ben Kingsley’s character, Trevor Slattery. This character, who served as the court jester of the Ten Rings organization after being held captive in the events of Iron Man 3 and All Hail the King, brought much-needed humor through his Shakespearean monologues.
Cretton jokingly suggested a spinoff titled “Trevor Goes to Hollywood,” which would explore Trevor’s journey through the film industry.
“This idea actually came about while we were on the set of Shang-Chi, and I really enjoyed working with Sir Ben [Kingsley] and his character,” Cretton explained. “So I did a joke pitch to my producer, Jonathan Schwartz, and said, ‘We should do Trevor Goes To Hollywood.’”
A Natural Fit
At the same time, Marvel Studios was developing a Wonder Man series—a show centered around a superhero who is also an actor and stuntman in Hollywood. This provided a perfect opportunity to merge superhero storytelling with satire of the entertainment industry, eventually leading to a more serious project.
The superhero element remains intact, with Yahya Abdul-Mateen II portraying the lead role. Marvel also created space to explore Trevor’s comedic side while defining the concept of MCU-Hollywood.
“Then when we were really pitching the show, we found out that Wonder Man was also being developed around what would a show be like in the MC Hollywood. Those two ideas collided, and that’s when Andrew [Guest] came in and helped us create the real vibe of the show,” Cretton added.
Shaping the Tone
Andrew Guest, the head writer, played a crucial role in shaping the show’s satirical and comedic tone. He was brought in by Cretton to transform the initial idea into a fully realized series.
