Robert Irwin Shares Embarrassing Story About Spilling Orange Juice on King Charles
Robert Irwin, the 22-year-old wildlife warrior and son of the late Steve Irwin, has shared a cringeworthy moment from his youth that he hasn’t spoken about before. The story involves an awkward encounter with King Charles during a lunch when he was just 14 years old.
During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Robert was asked to share an embarrassing story, and he didn’t hold back. “I’ve never really told this one. This is bad,” he said to host Jimmy Fallon, before revealing the incident.
According to Robert, the story took place during a lunch where he accidentally spilled orange juice across the table directly at the King of England. Despite the mishap, Charles managed to stay dry. Staff quickly swooped in and replaced the drink with a brand new, full pitcher. However, the problem wasn’t entirely solved – five minutes later, Robert knocked that one over too.
“They bring me another pitcher of orange juice, full to the brim. I did it again, five minutes later,” he said, recounting the event with a mix of humor and embarrassment.
Jimmy Fallon burst out laughing, and Robert took the situation in good humour. However, he admitted that the moment still stung, especially considering what his mother, Terri, had always told him growing up.
“She would always say to me, ‘Robert, if you were dining with royalty, you wouldn’t spill. So just treat it like you’re always dining with royalty,’” he recalled.
Although Robert didn’t specify the exact date of the story, the most likely occasion was in 2018, when then-Prince Charles visited Lady Elliot Island off the coast of Queensland. During the visit, Charles spent the day with the Irwin family – Robert, Terri, and Bindi – for a meeting focused on marine conservation and the future of the Great Barrier Reef.
The group also had the opportunity to spend time with baby sea turtles during the visit. At the time, Robert was just 14 years old. He described the experience as one he was “truly honoured” to be part of, and was excited to meet someone so passionate about conservation.
This story highlights not only the challenges of growing up in the public eye but also the importance of maintaining composure in high-profile situations. While the memory might be a bit awkward, it also serves as a reminder of how even the most well-intentioned moments can turn into unforgettable experiences.
For young people who are following in the footsteps of their parents, stories like these can be both humbling and inspiring. They show that even the most confident individuals can have moments of vulnerability, and that learning from those moments is part of the journey.
Robert’s story is a testament to his ability to laugh at himself and move forward with grace. It also underscores the unique challenges that come with being part of a family known for its work in wildlife conservation and public engagement.
As he continues to build his own legacy, Robert’s experiences, whether embarrassing or triumphant, will undoubtedly shape the path he takes in the world of environmental advocacy and beyond.
