A Personal Struggle with Health
A well-known children’s TV presenter has shared his challenging journey with health issues that significantly impacted his ability to walk. Dave Benson Phillips, 61, who is most recognized for hosting the CBBC game show Get Your Own Back, disclosed his “very painful” battle with a serious medical condition.
Dave first noticed something was wrong while performing in a pantomime on stage. His experience during his time in Jack And The Beanstalk was described as “scary.” He recounted the moment he started experiencing tingling in his legs and a loss of mobility. This issue developed slowly but was extremely painful and alarming.
Diagnosis and Management
Known as the “godfather of gunge” throughout the 90s, Dave mentioned that he had been aware of being prediabetic due to regular blood tests. This condition affects one in nine Brits. Despite believing he would never develop full-blown diabetes, Dave’s condition worsened around 10 years ago.
At one point, he was unable to walk for a week or so. Upon visiting the hospital, he received a confirmed diagnosis of type 2 diabetes, which occurs when insulin does not function properly in the body, leading to high glucose levels. To manage this, Dave began taking medication to lower his blood sugar levels and adopted a healthier diet.
A Wake-Up Call
In 2020, Dave experienced a minor heart attack. He described the incident as occurring while he was posting a birthday card one night. The pain felt like “somebody had got a spiky nailed shoe and pushed it into my chest,” which served as a real wake-up call. At that time, Dave weighed 19 stone but managed to lose seven stone through a combination of a new diet and walking.

Monitoring and Lifestyle Changes
To keep track of his diabetes, Dave now wears a glucose monitor that “takes away all the guess work.” This device helps him manage his condition more effectively. Dave also encourages people to pay attention to their diet and make necessary lifestyle changes, especially if they have been diagnosed with prediabetes.
“I’ve had a real battle. I don’t like the fact that there’s things I’ve had to give up,” he said. However, he acknowledges that having diabetes made him more conscious of making good decisions regarding his lifestyle. “I want to be around for as long as possible.”

Final Thoughts
Dave’s story highlights the importance of early detection and management of health conditions. His journey serves as a reminder of the impact that lifestyle choices can have on overall well-being. By sharing his experiences, Dave hopes to inspire others to take their health seriously and make informed decisions about their lives.
