Jill Biden Supports Joe’s 2024 Re-election Despite Health Concerns

Jill Biden’s Reflections on Her Husband’s 2024 Re-election Bid

Jill Biden, the former First Lady, has shared her perspective on supporting her husband, Joe Biden, in his 2024 re-election campaign. She emphasized that the ultimate decision to run or step down was solely Joe’s, as he would have to live with it for the rest of his life. This statement came during an interview with Craig Melvin on the Today show, where she was promoting her memoir, “View From the West Wing.”

During this period, the family experienced significant emotional pain and uncertainty. Jill highlighted that while she could not make such a major decision for her husband, she acknowledged the intense private discussions and fears surrounding the end of the Biden presidency.

The Debate That Left Her Concerned

Jill admitted that watching her husband’s verbal stumbles during the June 2024 debate against Donald Trump was deeply unsettling. She described feeling terrified, even thinking, “Oh my God, he’s having a stroke.” Despite her internal panic, she publicly praised Joe’s performance immediately after the debate to support him.

She also mentioned that she still does not fully understand what caused the poor performance that night. While she believes Joe retains the essence of the same Joe Biden, she acknowledges that he is naturally slowing down due to the pressures of the office.

The Final Decision Was His Alone

Jill noted that although the family provided input, the final choice to withdraw from the race in late July 2024 was entirely Joe’s decision. She reflected on the painful experience, stating, “As I look back, would I want to put Joe through the hurt and the pain that we felt during that time? Never. It was so hurtful. It had to be his decision. It had to be his decision alone because he had to live with that decision the rest of his life.”

Public Debate Over Transparency

The revelations in Jill’s memoir have sparked intense public debate about the transparency of the Biden administration during the 2024 election cycle. Right-wing critics have accused Jill and close aides of enabling or covering up the former president’s physical and cognitive decline before it was too late.

Jill addressed these concerns, stating, “He aged,” and noting that everyone saw him aging. She also mentioned that the doctors assured her he was healthy and that she witnessed him performing his duties every day.

A Legacy Under Scrutiny

While Jill defended her husband’s abilities, she acknowledged that there were moments when he slowed down and occasionally stuttered. However, she maintained that he was still doing a good job.

Close allies like former President Bill Clinton have defended Joe’s legacy, stating they never witnessed a level of decline that made him unfit for office. Ultimately, Joe ended his campaign on July 21, 2024, endorsing Kamala Harris. The former vice president went on to lose the general election to Trump, a loss Jill called shocking.

Health Challenges and Prostate Cancer Diagnosis

In May 2025, it was revealed that Joe Biden is battling stage 4 prostate cancer that has metastasized to his bones. Jill described the initial diagnosis as “shocking” and noted that White House doctors had previously skipped standard PSA blood tests because medical guidelines suggest men over 70 do not routinely need them.

She expressed that Joe is “doing OK” but emphasized the severity of his condition. “If he had just been diagnosed with prostate cancer, that’s one thing because that can be cured, but the fact that it metastasized to his bones, that makes it a whole different story. And so I think Joe will live with cancer for the rest of his life.”

A New Chapter for the Biden Family

Jill’s reflections offer a glimpse into the personal and political challenges faced by the Biden family. As Joe navigates his health struggles, the focus remains on his resilience and determination. The former First Lady continues to support her husband, emphasizing the importance of making decisions that align with his well-being and future.
