Health Alert: FDA Issues Warning on Mood Shot Containing Unlisted Opioid Substances
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a health warning regarding the mood shot known as Better Weather Fix Elixir. According to the agency, the product contains two substances—mitragynine and mitragynine pseudoindoxyl—that are not listed on its label. These compounds are derived from the kratom plant and function similarly to opioids in the brain.
Manufacturer Recalls Product Following Safety Concerns
Better Weather Actives LLC, the manufacturer of the product, voluntarily recalled all lots of the 15 ml bottle on May 28, 2026. This recall comes after an earlier action by distributor XD Investments LLC, which had already removed approximately 448 boxes of all flavor variants from the market. The products were available for purchase between November 9, 2025, and March 28, 2026, through online stores xdeor.com and masensupplements.com.
Kratom: A Potent Opioid in Disguise
Kratom is sourced from the leaves of the Southeast Asian tree Mitragyna speciosa. The active compound, mitragynine, binds to the same μ-opioid receptors in the brain as morphine and heroin. Mitragynine pseudoindoxyl, a derivative of mitragynine, is considered even more potent than its parent compound.
The FDA has highlighted that mitragynine pseudoindoxyl is a stronger variant of kratom and warns of potential side effects, including:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Rapid heart rate
- Palpitations
- Hallucinations
- Sedation
- Anxiety
- Unconsciousness
Additionally, the agency notes that ingestion of these substances can lead to respiratory suppression, which could be fatal. The FDA also warns that prolonged use may result in addiction, with severe opioid withdrawal symptoms.
DEA Recognizes Kratom as Opioid-Like Substance
The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) classifies kratom substances as having classic opioid effects, including respiratory depression that can be life-threatening. This classification underscores the risks associated with the use of kratom-derived products, even when they are marketed as dietary supplements or mood enhancers.
Increased Risk When Combined with Other Medications
One of the key concerns raised by the FDA is that consumers may not be aware of the presence of these opioid-like substances in the product. Since the kratom derivatives are not disclosed on the label, users may unknowingly consume them alongside other medications—prescribed or illicit. This combination can significantly increase the risk of severe or even fatal physiological effects.
Despite the recall, neither Better Weather Actives nor XD Investments have reported any specific adverse effects at the time of the announcement. However, the FDA strongly advises consumers to stop using the product and return it to the point of purchase.
What Consumers Should Do
If you have purchased the Better Weather Fix Elixir, it is crucial to discontinue use immediately. The FDA recommends returning the product to the retailer or seller where it was purchased. For further information, consumers can contact the FDA directly or check for updates on official websites.
This incident highlights the importance of transparency in product labeling and the need for consumers to remain vigilant about the ingredients in the products they use. As the regulatory landscape continues to evolve, staying informed is essential for making safe and informed choices.
