Mihocek Back on Her Feet After Neck Surgery

Brody Mihocek’s Recovery and Collingwood’s Injury Struggles

Brody Mihocek, a forward for the Melbourne Football Club, is currently recovering from surgery to address a neck fracture he sustained during the AFL King’s Birthday match. The incident occurred when Mihocek was stretchered off the MCG following a tackle, which halted play for 10 minutes before he was taken to the hospital by ambulance.

The Demons have shared positive updates regarding Mihocek’s condition, stating that he is recovering well and has already started walking after the operation on Monday night. In a statement released by the club, it was confirmed that Mihocek successfully underwent surgery and that doctors provided an encouraging report.

Melbourne’s football boss, Alan Richardson, expressed relief that the procedure went smoothly. He acknowledged the emotional impact of the incident, saying:

“You never want to see an incident in our game like what we saw with Brody on Monday. Brody is in the very best of care and was able to undergo surgery last night, which, thankfully, went as planned. Our primary focus right now is supporting Brody, his partner Polly and their family through his recovery, while ensuring his return to full health.”

While Mihocek’s situation is improving, Collingwood faced its own set of challenges after a tight loss to Melbourne. Defender Brayden Maynard suffered two shoulder dislocations during the game, raising concerns about his availability for the rest of the season.

Maynard underwent scans on Tuesday morning and admitted uncertainty about whether he would need surgery. If an operation is required, it could end his season. His injury added to a difficult day for the Magpies, who now sit 11th on the ladder with a record of 5-7-1.

“I hope I can just strengthen the bastard and get back out there within a couple of weeks,” Maynard said. “But we’ll see how we go. If I have to get surgery, I will have to get surgery. I’ve been in this situation before and I’ve been able to stick fat with it and strengthen it up, just get on with it. Hopefully I can do that, but time will tell.”

When asked about his feelings on the situation, Maynard referenced Neale Daniher, the late FightMND advocate. He said:

“I don’t know, it’s a bit of a tough one, but I feel like the stuff and the strengthening I’ve done over the couple of years that I’ve had shoulder issues, I’ve been able to get over it and just get going. ‘Play on’ – as Neale said. Keep playing on.”
