Ben Stokes applauds Ollie Robinson and Emilio Gay after NZ win

England’s Strong Start in International Summer

England began their international summer with a commanding 115-run Test victory over New Zealand at Lord’s, and captain Ben Stokes praised the performances of two new players who made a significant impact.

Ollie Robinson, who returned from a two-year absence, played a crucial role in the win. He took seven wickets and contributed valuable runs at the tail end of the innings. His performance was a highlight for the team, especially after his long period away from the national squad.

Emilio Gay also made a strong impression on his debut, scoring 57 runs. His selection over Zak Crawley brought more stability to the top of the order, which was essential given the challenging conditions of the Lord’s pitch.

Stokes acknowledged the importance of this match, stating that it was a must-win game following the team’s struggles in the Ashes series last winter. He highlighted Robinson’s skill and the improvements he has made since his return.

“Ollie Robinson’s skill has never been in question,” Stokes said. “There’s just a few other things that we’d obviously spoken about behind the scenes that we wanted to see him go away and improve on and he’s obviously gone away and done that.”

The captain also praised Robinson’s attitude and approach to the game. “The pleasing thing for me, as captain, and a leader in the group, is the way that he’s spoken about this week. It would have been very easy to rest on his laurels when everything’s gone so well for him. The language he’s used is it being just a start, and there being a lot more hard work to do.”

Stokes emphasized the value of having Robinson in the team. “The more Ollie Robinson has an England shirt on his back, the better it is for us because he’s an outstanding bowler.”

Gay’s inclusion in the team provided a solid foundation for England’s batting lineup. Stokes noted the challenge of opening the innings, especially on a difficult pitch.

“I said to Emilio, that’s at the high end of challenge that an opening batter is going to be exposed,” Stokes said. “So, you’re better off getting it early on, so you can understand how tough it is.”

He added that Gay’s contribution at the top of the order would significantly boost his confidence. “For him to make a significant contribution at the top of the order will do wonders for his confidence.”

Stokes also reflected on the importance of the victory in the context of the three-match series. “I’m not going to lie. I knew how big this game was in terms of the result and how it was going to be perceived externally if it didn’t go well.”
