A Tragic Incident Involving Mental Health and a Beloved Actor
The tragic death of James Handy, a well-known actor featured in the film Top Gun: Maverick, has sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry and local community. The incident occurred when Handy was allegedly stabbed to death outside his home in Tarzana, California, on Wednesday. His girlfriend, Wendy Gledhill, 76, revealed that her son, Michael Gledhill, 44, had been struggling with mental health issues and had stopped taking his medication prior to the alleged attack.
Gledhill spoke out just 48 hours after the incident, expressing deep sorrow and disbelief. She described her son as someone who had been diagnosed with schizophrenia but had gone off his prescribed medication. “I loved James and my son,” she said, while also acknowledging the emotional turmoil she was experiencing. “I’m so sorry this happened. I’m still in shock.”

Gledhill shared that she was still trying to cope with the reality of what had transpired. “I can’t believe my son did it,” she added. “I’m just trying to make it through one day at a time, a minute at a time.”
Michael Gledhill was photographed being taken into custody by Los Angeles Police Department officers following the killing. According to reports, he called 911 shortly after the incident, reportedly saying, “I am the son of man. I just killed the man of sin.” He is now in police custody and is scheduled to appear in court later that week.

Authorities have not yet released a motive for the attack. However, neighbors reported that Michael and Handy had been arguing the night before the incident. One resident told Fox 11 that Gledhill may have been experiencing delusions before the attack.
Handy, who was 81 years old, was found bleeding to death in the front yard of his home. He was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The veteran actor had an extensive career spanning decades, with appearances in numerous films and television shows. He played the bartender, Jimmy, in Top Gun: Maverick and had roles in other notable productions such as Jumanji, Logan, and The X-Files.

Handy’s acting career began in the late 1970s, with his first on-screen appearance in ABC’s Ryan’s Hope in 1977. He continued to build a successful career, appearing in popular TV series such as NYPD Blue, Alias, and The West Wing. His work on Jumanji saw him play the exterminator, while he also portrayed Captain Haverhill on NYPD Blue and Arthur Devlin on Alias.
His talent agent, Pam Ellis-Evenas, confirmed the tragic news in a statement: “With great sadness, I can confirm that the gentleman who was attacked and killed on Wednesday in Tarzana was the actor James Handy.”
