Renowned cancer researcher Richard Scolyer passes away at 59

A Legacy of Courage and Compassion

Prof Richard Scolyer, a globally recognized cancer researcher and former Australian of the Year, has passed away at the age of 59. His family shared a heartfelt statement that he wrote in the final stages of his illness, reflecting on his journey and the support he received from people across Australia and beyond.

In his message, Scolyer expressed deep gratitude to all Australians for their love and support. He acknowledged the many people he had met during his travels as a joint 2024 Australian of the Year, his online community, and his fellow Tasmanians. “You’ve laughed with me, cried with me, and provided encouragement and support to keep going just when I needed it most,” he said.

He also thanked those who allowed him to share his journey openly, without sugarcoating the challenges. “I hope I have in some small way made the road ahead easier and smoother for others,” he added. If his legacy could continue beyond these words, he would be delighted to be remembered as a proud everyday Aussie who ‘gave it a crack,’ inspiring others to pursue their dreams with humility, love, and compassion.

Battling Brain Cancer with Resilience

Scolyer was diagnosed with grade-four inoperable brain cancer in May 2023, with doctors giving him six to eight months to live. In a groundbreaking move, he underwent a series of novel immunotherapy treatments, which successfully slowed the growth of his glioblastoma until its return in early 2025.

In March, he announced via his Facebook page that the cancer had progressed. “Not the best day ever,” he wrote. “There seems to be further progression of my brain tumour … Whilst it is a bit disappointing, in the big picture it’s not the end of the road and I’ve got more to do!”

A week earlier, he had told his 150,000 followers that he was “a bit anxious” about the brain scan, which was scheduled shortly before he was due to take part in a four-day leg of the Tour de Cure charity cycling event in Tasmania, where he was born and grew up.

Honoring a National Icon

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described Scolyer as “one of our brightest lights and one of our biggest hearts.” He confirmed that Scolyer will be mourned at a state funeral. “Prof Scolyer took his place in the national spotlight with determination and purpose as he very publicly dealt with his glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer,” the prime minister said.

“Every day, this remarkable man – the cancer specialist who became his own subject – took us into his confidence and he lifted us all in the process. Richard’s journey was difficult and confronting … yet it was one he travelled with courage, determination and a grace that never ceased to be remarkable.”

Contributions to Medical Science

Prof John Thompson of Sydney University praised Scolyer’s “cheery, down-to-earth ‘lad from Launceston’ personality.” He highlighted the significant benefits Scolyer’s work in medicine and pathology research has brought to countless cancer patients worldwide.

Scolyer and his co-medical director at Melanoma Institute Australia, Georgina Long, were jointly named Australian of the Year in 2024 in recognition of their work on immunotherapy as a cure for advanced melanoma. Throughout his career, he received numerous accolades, including nine New South Wales Premier’s Awards for Outstanding Cancer Research, such as the Wildfire Highly Cited Publication award. In 2021, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia.

A Lasting Impact

Richard Scolyer’s life and work have left an indelible mark on the world of medical research and public health. His openness about his personal battle with cancer inspired millions and brought attention to the importance of ongoing research and treatment advancements.

His story is a testament to the power of resilience, generosity, and the human spirit. As the nation mourns his passing, his legacy will continue to inspire future generations to pursue their passions with courage and compassion.
