Young giant set to replace Hogan in MCG showdown

GWS Giants Face Challenges as Key Forwards Suffer Injuries

The 2024 season has been a difficult one for the GWS Giants, with several key players facing injury setbacks. Jesse Hogan, the team’s spearhead, has once again found himself sidelined due to an injury, forcing coach Adam Kingsley to make adjustments in the forward line.

Hogan, who was expected to be a major threat against Hawthorn on Friday night, is currently out of action after fracturing his finger. This latest injury adds to a string of problems that have plagued the 31-year-old throughout the year. Earlier in the season, he missed a month of football due to a hip injury and also dealt with a quad issue during the round-six Sydney derby. His most recent setback came during last round’s match against Carlton, where he suffered a hand injury that eventually led to a fracture.

Kingsley confirmed that Hogan has undergone surgery and will be out for an indefinite period. The player has struggled to regain his best form, scoring just one goal in each of his two games against St Kilda and Carlton. Overall, he has managed 12 goals from nine matches this season.

In addition to Hogan’s injury, key defender Jayden Laverde is also sidelined for at least three weeks due to a hamstring strain. This has placed additional pressure on the Giants’ squad as they look to compete in upcoming matches.

Coach Reflects on the Challenges

Kingsley acknowledged the frustration that Hogan is experiencing, noting that the 2024 Coleman Medallist has faced a series of obstacles this season. “It hasn’t been the ideal season for him,” Kingsley said. “He had a difficult pre-season, and we’ve been fighting against it a little bit.”

He added that injuries have been a recurring issue for the team. “You feel like you get past something and then something else bobs up,” Kingsley explained. “It’s been a very difficult year for him and for us, trying to manage that.”

Despite the challenges, there is some positive news for the Giants. Max Gruzewski, a young forward, is set to return to the side after recovering from a hand injury. Gruzewski had previously impressed in Hogan’s absence, kicking three goals twice in wins against Brisbane and Melbourne. His return comes at a crucial time, as he steps back into the lineup to replace Hogan.

“Max will be ready to go,” Kingsley said. “We’re not blessed with keys at the moment. A few of them are injured. It’s handy to have him available.”

Preparing for the Challenge Against Hawthorn

The Giants now face a significant test against third-placed Hawthorn in a rare Friday night match at the MCG. While the team dominated the Hawks in their elimination final rematch earlier in the season, winning by 27 points, the sides have had contrasting performances since then.

GWS currently sit in 13th place with a record of 6-8, while Hawthorn remains strong in the standings. Kingsley emphasized the importance of focusing on improvements rather than relying on past results.

“You can live in hope, or you can do,” Kingsley said. “We’re more about action, fixing the things that need to be fixed.”

He also noted that Hawthorn games are typically close contests. “In terms of history, it would suggest that Hawthorn games, particularly, are always close, within a goal or two, either way,” Kingsley said. “We’re expecting that again tomorrow night. We have been strong in the back half of seasons.”

As the Giants prepare for the challenge ahead, the focus will be on hard work and preparation. With several key players still recovering, the team must rely on depth and resilience to navigate the rest of the season.
