Community Support for Ketu Bus Terminal Redevelopment
The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has gained the support of community leaders in Agboyi-Ketu for the planned redevelopment of the Ketu lay-by into a modern bus terminal. This initiative is part of broader efforts to ease congestion and enhance the commuter experience along the transport corridor.
The development was announced in a recent statement, following a stakeholders’ meeting where government officials and local leaders agreed on key conditions to support the project. According to the statement, the engagement “finalised plans for the transformation of the Ketu Lay-by (Demurin Bound) into a world-class modern bus terminal.” The project is described as a major component of the Ketu–Alapere–Akanimodo transport corridor.
The initiative aims to “eliminate traffic bottlenecks and provide a structured, dignifying environment for thousands of commuters” who use the route daily. The meeting brought together a wide range of traditional and political leaders, including the Oba of Ketu-Kosofe, Isiaka Adio Balogun, alongside officials of Agboyi-Ketu Local Council Development Area and members of the legislative arm.
Key Details of the Project
Femi Fayombo, who briefed participants, stated that contractors were set to mobilise to the site. He added that the terminal upgrade went beyond the initial scope of the project. The state government expanded the plan “as a direct intervention to improve the quality of life and the efficiency of the transport system within the Ketu axis.”
S.A. Agbomeji, the Director of Transport Policy and Coordination, who represented the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, stressed the importance of cooperation from residents and operators for the project’s success. He explained that the government and the community had agreed on measures to ensure smooth execution, noting that “the project’s success hinges on a mutual agreement between the government and the community.”
Measures for Smooth Execution
Under the arrangement, market women and traders will vacate the roadsides and move into existing designated market stalls to ensure safety and prevent project obstruction. Non-regulated transport operators will also strictly maintain designated loading and off-loading zones to prevent the recurrence of gridlock.
The proposed terminal is part of the broader Lagos Strategic Transport Master Plan. This plan aims to develop an integrated system that links road, rail, and water transportation for improved mobility across the state.
Impact on Commuters and Local Economy
The redevelopment is expected to have a significant impact on both commuters and the local economy. By creating a structured environment, the new bus terminal will not only reduce traffic congestion but also improve the overall commuting experience. Commuters will benefit from a more organised and efficient system, while local traders and market women will find a safer and more stable space to conduct their businesses.
Additionally, the project is anticipated to boost economic activity in the area by attracting more visitors and facilitating smoother movement of goods and people. The collaboration between LAMATA and the local community is seen as a crucial factor in ensuring the project’s long-term success.
Future Prospects
With the backing of community leaders and the commitment of government officials, the Ketu bus terminal redevelopment is well-positioned to become a model for future transport projects in Lagos. The integration of different modes of transportation will create a more connected and efficient transport network, benefiting residents and businesses alike.
As the project moves forward, continued communication and cooperation between all stakeholders will be essential. The success of this initiative could serve as a blueprint for similar developments in other parts of the city, contributing to the overall goal of improving urban mobility in Lagos.
