Waymo Repurposes Old EV Batteries for Renewable Energy Storage
Waymo, the self-driving car division of Alphabet, has unveiled a new initiative to give old batteries from its robotaxi fleet a second life. These batteries, which have been used in autonomous taxis, will now be repurposed for renewable energy storage. This move is part of a strategic supply agreement with B2U Storage Solutions, a US-based company focused on energy storage solutions.
The partnership aims to use thousands of degraded batteries from Waymo’s fleet to store power generated by wind and solar installations. This stored energy can then be returned to local power grids when needed, providing hundreds of megawatt-hours of electricity. The initiative not only supports the growth of clean energy but also promotes a circular economy, where resources are reused rather than discarded.
Adam Lenz, head of sustainability and environment at Waymo, highlighted the significance of this project. “Our shared fleet of EVs provides a massive opportunity to support the growth of clean energy on the electricity grid while expanding the circular economy,” he said. “Through this partnership, we can repurpose our batteries for local grid storage and ensure our batteries continue to provide economic and environmental value to the community long after they’ve retired from the road.”
The Second Life of EV Batteries
Electric vehicle (EV) batteries typically last between 15 to 20 years before their capacity drops to around 70-80 per cent. At this point, they may no longer be practical for use in vehicles due to reduced driving range. However, these batteries still hold a significant amount of charge and can be repurposed for other applications.
This so-called “second life” is becoming increasingly common as the demand for renewable energy storage grows. By using these batteries for grid storage, their lifespan can be extended by up to a decade before they need to be recycled.
B2U’s facility in Lancaster, California, already uses more than 1,300 repurposed EV batteries. According to the company, this initiative is a key step in their mission to provide integrated repurposing services to the automotive industry.

By extending the use of these batteries as grid storage, we are monetising the full potential of EV batteries, now providing crucial stability to the power grid as energy demand continues to grow.”
