James Milner ends legendary 24-year career

A Remarkable Career Comes to an End

James Milner has officially announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 40, marking the end of a career that spanned nearly a quarter of a century. The veteran midfielder, who concluded his journey with Brighton & Hove Albion, leaves the game as the Premier League’s all-time appearance record holder and one of English football’s most respected figures.

A Journey of Longevity and Versatility

Milner’s career began at his hometown club, Leeds United, where he made his senior debut at just 16 years and 309 days old in November 2002. He quickly made history by becoming the then-youngest goalscorer in Premier League history when he scored against Sunderland on Boxing Day later that year.

After making 54 appearances for Leeds, scoring five goals and providing two assists, Milner moved to Newcastle United in 2004. He would later enjoy spells with Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool, and Brighton & Hove Albion, establishing himself as one of the most reliable and versatile players of his generation.

Reflecting on his career, Milner said: “To have gone on to represent Newcastle, Aston Villa, Man City, Liverpool and Brighton and Hove Albion – and not forgetting a memorable month at Swindon Town – has been an incredible privilege.”

Across all competitions, Milner amassed 903 senior appearances, scoring 86 goals and registering 135 assists.

Silverware and Records

Milner enjoyed some of the most successful periods of his career with Manchester City and Liverpool, winning a combined 12 major trophies. Among his honours are:

  • Three Premier League titles
  • One UEFA Champions League title

On the international stage, Milner earned 61 caps for England and represented his country at two FIFA World Cups and two UEFA European Championships.

His most enduring achievement, however, may be his Premier League appearance record. Milner retires having played 658 matches in the competition, more than any other player in its history.

A Farewell Full of Gratitude

Announcing his decision, Milner said: “After 24 seasons in the Premier League, it feels like the right time to bring an end to my playing career.”

He added: “I leave the game with immense pride, gratitude and memories that will stay with me for the rest of my life. Football has given me far more than I could ever have imagined, and I will always be thankful for the opportunities it provided. Thank you to everyone who has been part of the journey.”

Legacy and Impact

Milner’s career is a testament to dedication, adaptability, and professionalism. His ability to perform at the highest level for so long is a rare feat, and his contributions to each club he has played for are undeniable.

As he steps away from the pitch, fans and fellow professionals alike will remember him not just for his achievements, but for the example he set both on and off the field.
