Valentine’s Day Flowers: From Bloom to Blight

Valentine’s Day Bouquets: Which Blooms Will Truly Impress?

As Valentine’s Day approaches, the pressure to find the perfect romantic gesture intensifies. While a supermarket bunch might be a last-minute option, it’s unlikely to truly capture the sentiment of the day. Florists across Australia are experiencing a surge in business, with many offering same-day delivery for those cutting it fine. However, a significant number of these arrangements rely on external delivery services, meaning your carefully chosen gift’s fate rests in the hands of couriers.

To help you navigate the floral market and avoid a wilting disappointment, a selection of popular bouquet delivery services available across Australia were put to the test. The evaluation focused on key aspects: punctuality of delivery, the quality of packaging, the overall presentation of the flowers, and their longevity. The price range of the tested services varied significantly, from an affordable £10 bunch to a more extravagant £105 arrangement. While most deliveries arrived on time, some fell short in other crucial areas, with a few even leaving bouquets languishing in reception areas, diminishing the element of surprise.

Here’s a breakdown of how these popular floral services fared:

Fortnum & Mason: Overpriced Potential

Price: £105

Expectation: Hailing from one of the world’s most prestigious department stores, a Valentine’s delivery from Fortnum & Mason is designed to elicit gasps of delight. At a considerable price point, this arrangement of roses – featuring varieties like ‘romantic antique’, ‘vitality’, ‘juliet’, and ‘pavlova’ – is pitched as the ultimate romantic gift.

Reality: While the delivery, handled by DPD, was punctual, the package was left in a reception area all day, despite the intended recipient being present. For the significant cost, this proved to be a letdown. The flowers themselves were large, but the quantity of buds per stem was sparse. Presentation was also a concern, with flimsy packaging that tore easily, revealing flowers that already appeared to be past their prime, some even bearing marks. In comparison to more affordable options, the visual appeal was lacking.

Verdict: Overpriced.

Bloom & Wild: A Droopy Affair

Price: £62

Expectation: Bloom & Wild is a well-established name in the online bouquet delivery space. Their ‘Avelina’ selection promises to be “like a favourite song that always comes on at just the right moment,” aiming to bring “warmth and assurance” with its gentle, calming blooms that convey a familiar, heartfelt message.

Reality: These red blossoms arrived on time via DPD, but, mirroring the experience with other providers, were left in a downstairs reception area. To add to the issue, the package was discovered to be placed upside down. While the delivery itself was prompt, the brown packaging was crinkled and torn, and the flowers appeared droopy. Despite attempts to revive them with water, they never quite achieved that desired “bloom.” Nevertheless, the arrangement did retain a certain prettiness.

A spokesperson for Bloom & Wild stated: “We’re delighted to be helping tens of thousands of customers celebrate Valentine’s Day this week. We pride ourselves on the quality of our bouquets and service we offer to customers, but when we occasionally don’t live up to expectations we go above and beyond to put things right. We encourage any disappointed customers to get in touch with our friendly Customer Delight team who will quickly resolve issues to meet our Happiness Guarantee.”

Verdict: Droopy.

123 Flowers: Better With Age

Price: £69.99

Expectation: The ‘Alexandra’ bouquet, featuring ‘memory lane’ and ‘deep water’ roses, oriental lilies, and eucalyptus, is marketed as a “WOW factor” creation by artisan florists.

Reality: Timeliness was not an issue, with Royal Mail delivering the package on schedule. However, the courier handed over the package sideways. Visually, the bouquet made an impressive initial impact with attractive packaging. A few rose petals showed signs of wilting, but with water, they perked up considerably. Crucially, unlike some other deliveries, not all the roses and flowers were fully open, allowing for the pleasure of watching them bloom over time.

Verdict: Got better with time.

Appleyard London: A Statement Piece

Price: £57.99

Expectation: This offering of 50 Red Roses certainly promises to be an impressive statement piece upon opening the box and is noted for its longevity compared to other options.

Reality: Arriving on time, this bouquet presents a strong visual impact when first unboxed, making it a suitable choice for the romantic season. Its lasting quality further enhances its appeal.

Verdict: Statement piece.

Moonpig: Dull, But Fragrant

Price: £49.99

Expectation: Moonpig offers a diverse range of bouquet options, including collaborations with popular brands like Hotel Chocolat, Cath Kidston, and Next, with prices ranging from £10 to over £50.

Reality: While the delivery arrived on time, it was again left downstairs. The roses, along with the brown packaging, appeared rather dull. Although acceptable, they didn’t quite measure up to the quality of other bouquets at a similar price point. However, for those who appreciate a floral scent, these roses were notably fragrant.

Verdict: Dull.

Deliveroo: Cheap and Cheerful

Price: From £10

Expectation: Deliveroo’s floral offerings, which interestingly include arrangements with playful quips about relationship stages, are presented as a convenient choice for same-day delivery.

Reality: The flowers arrived promptly and were visually bright and attractive. A potential drawback, however, is that all the blooms appeared to be fully open upon arrival, raising questions about their potential lifespan.

Verdict: Cheap and cheerful.

Interflora: Perfectly Romantic

Price: £45

Expectation: Interflora’s ‘With Love 6 Red Roses’ bouquet is described as a stunning, bespoke option that offers excellent value, being one of the more affordably priced choices.

Reality: This was, by far, the most outstanding experience from start to finish. The website was incredibly user-friendly, and the delivery was handled by a delightful local florist who brought the flowers directly to the door. The reporter engaged in a pleasant conversation about flower care and selection, highlighting the evident passion and expertise involved. The flowers arrived unspoiled, presented in a beautiful, love-themed box. The roses were simply gorgeous and remain sensational, still looking vibrant. The service was exceptional, prioritising quality over sheer volume, resulting in a truly romantic and memorable gift.

Verdict: Perfectly romantic.

Haute: Irritating Luxury

Price: £90

Expectation: Haute’s ‘Rouge Royale Hat Box’ is positioned as a premium option, promising “timeless beauty” and “rich red blooms that ooze romance.” The description boasts of Freedom Red Roses, Gypsophila, and Steelgrass, presented in a sophisticated hatbox.

Reality: While the delivery was punctual, the overall experience was less than charming and proved to be rather irritating. An attempt to slightly water the flowers resulted in the box becoming damp and stained, suggesting a potential tear in the packaging. While the arrangement was visually appealing with added decorative elements, the £90 price tag felt unjustified given the less-than-ideal handling and potential for damage.

Verdict: Irritating.
